That is an old : and exploded notion. Some organisms will make fat, let them he fed on the , leanest and scantiest and least saccharine I descriptions of food, wtiile others v^ill not ' be “ fattened” let them feed on the most “ fattening” of diets. The matter is one in regard to which it is supremely desirable and politic to lx- natural, adapting tlie food taken to the requirements of health rather than substance. Simple food, sufficient exercise, uiul regular habits with moderation in the use of stimulants, compose the maxim of a safe
and healthy way of life. An Enterprising: Newsboy.
[New York Herald.] ,
An energetic New York newsboy, dis covering that the numerous villages on the Long Branch railroad were not served with the morning journals until nearly noon, chaptered a small steamboat on .Monday morning and with a goodly supply of papers steamed for Red Rank, which he reached at half-past six a. m He dispatched another boy by wagon to Long Branch, who startled the vill:ii:rt - with the unexpected cry of “ New York morning papers!” He did a capital business ami dispuseu of nearly all his
stock.
After this he boarded the eight o’clock train at tlie station and while in the act of elearing out the remainder he was stopped by Conductor Mulford, who seized his bundle of papers and locked them up in the mail car. President Reckless, of the road, happening to lx- in the train, was appealed to by tlie boy, the result being the restoration of his papers, which he quickly sold, and the administration of a severe rebuke to tlie conductor. The passengers, admiring the enterprise of the young fellow, raised a handsome .'UF - for him then and there. Next day, however, his new business was nipped in the hud, a special news train, the result of the boy’s scheme, being put on.
It is a most agiacable dressing, which is at once harmless and effectual, fo r | )re . serving the hair. It restores, with the gloss and freshness of youth, faded orgray,
11 ! s j light, and red hair, to a rich brown, or deep 11 18 , black, as may be desired. By its use thin
hair is thickened, and baldness often though not always cured. It checks failing of the hair immediately, and causes a nev growth in all cases where tho glands are not decayed; while to brashy, weak, or otherwise diseased hair, it imparts vitality and strength, and renders it pliable.
The Vigob cleanses the scalp, cures and prevents the formation of dandruff; and by its cooling, stimulating, and soothing properties, it heals most if not all of the humors and diseases peculiar to the scalp, keeping it cool, dean, and soft, under which conditions diseases of the scalp and hair are impossible. As a Dressing for Ladies’ Hair The Vigor is incomparable. It is colorless, contains neither oil nor dye, and will not soil white cambric. It imparts an agreeable and lasting perfume, and as an article for the toilet it is economical and unsurpassed iu its excellence. Prepared by Dr. J. C. A Sensible Chapter on Amusements. [Henry Ward Beecher at Cooper Institute.] All amusements ought to counteract a man’s business. If his business is chiefly muscular, his amusements ought to be brain amusements. Men whose occupations arc sucking dry their brains day by day should have amusements in just an opposite direction. For instance, how absurd it would he to advise a lawyer for recreation, after working hard all day in court, to play chess, and it would lie equally as absurd to say to a letter-carrier, who had been walking all day long, to take a walk after supper. There are many men for whom there is no such amusement provided. Where can a clergyman go to amuse himself? Why, if I were to go out for amusements as many do, the reporters would go for me, and if 1 were to go to hear the ‘Pinafore’ the fact would be known all over the continent the next day. Now, what provisions for amusements are made for lawyers and schoolmasters and merchants? Almost none. Our civilization makes but little provisions for the various wants of these classes, so far as wholesome amusement is concerned. Walking is good for a man, provided lie Inis anything to walk for. Next to that is riding, and I don’t know but if we could tly it would be better yet. Horseback riding is a noble amusement. I think for a man to override a generous horse is brutal. I think for him
,, .... „ „ ., to underride him is stupid. And let me Offico over ^'p^ftore. U-imlonc. say U|at jt is a pro:lt comfort to me when EVANS: & DEVORE, ,okof delations and read
