Royal Spendthrift* of the People'* Money. We have under one Government and nnder one flag a territory larger than that ruled by a d >zcn Governments in Europe; ami the difference in the salaries paid to kings and royalty, and those paid the servants of the people in our ’ republic are striking. The Czar of Russia get* $8,250,000 a 1 year, or $25,000 a day. The Sultan of 1 Turkey gets annually $0,000,000, or $1.8, I 000 per day. Napoleon III. had a salaI ry of $2,000,000 annually, or $14,000 each day. Francis Joseph of Austria receives $4,000,000 a year, or $10,000 a day. King William, of I’russiu, is paid $3,000,000 per year, and Victor Emanuel $2,400,000! and Good (}ueen Victoria manages to live on $2,200,000. Now, in addition to these salaries, each sovereign is furnished with a dozen or more first-class residences free of cost. In this country our president only gets $50,000 a year—just as much as the Czar of Russia gets in two days. General Sherman receives in all, some $18,000 per year—only a fraction more than the Sultan of Turkey gets each day. Tho whole exjiense of an American Congress for a session of six months, will not exceed—incidentals and all—$4,000,000. The people of this country complain of hard times. Is't them study the pauperism of England, and our word for it, they will deem the condition of our poorer , classes a comparatively happy one.

[Youth’s Companion.]
A writer, discoursing upon the way Wealth is accumulated, says that, as a ' general rule, it is the result of economy, j industry, ami attention to business. Poverty, on the contrary, comes (from ' idleness, extravagance, inattor.tYn to business. Of four-■ there are numerous exceptions to these general rulps. But ’ the facts justify the w riter in tho fol-
lowing sketch:
Here are six shoemakers working in one shop. One of them attends to his ! business; you can hear the music of his hammer late and early. He is in love, it may be, with some girl on the next street. He has made up his min i to he a man, to succeed, to make somebody else happy, to have a home; and while he is working, in his imagination, he can see his own tirCside, with the light falling
upon the faces of wife and child.
I The other five gentlemen work ns little is they can, sttond Sunday in dissipation, i have the headache Monday, and as a re1 suit, never advance. The industrious ! one, the one in love, gains the confidence of his employer, and in a little while, he ! cutsout work for these other fellows. I The next thing you know, he lias a shop of his own, the next a store, because the man of reputation, the man of known I integrity, can buy all lie wishes in the
United States upon credit.
The next tiling you know, he is married, and he has built him a house, and he is happy, and his dream has been
realized.
After a while, the same five shoemakers, having pursued the old course, stand on the corner some Sunday when he rides by. He has got a carriage, his wife sits by his side, her face covered with smiles, and they have got two children, their faces beaming with joy, and the blue ribbons are fluttering in the wind. And thereupon, these five shoemakers adjourn to some neighboring saloon, and pass a resolution that there is an irrepressible conflict between capital and
labor.

We would not dettact one iota from the well-earned laurels of Hr. Joyce. Tho grateful remembrance in which he is held by his late charge is well deserved, and we believe reciprocated by him in the highest degree. Yet we feel that it is due a people whose aims and aspirations are in some small degree trying to assist in bringing the world to a knowledge of the truth that such misrepresentations should not pass unnoticed.
