BE WISE AND HAPPY.
If you will stop all your extravagant and wrong notions in doctoring yourself and families with expensive doctors and cure-alls, that do harm always, and use only nature’s simple remedies for all

Let the hour be fixed for the religious services; lot tlu friends and neighbors be invited as usual, but at the close let them be quietly dis missed. St. Albans, Vt. Feb. 12. Deaii Sms:—After nearly sixteen consecutive years of prostration from spina! iisease, my bowels becoming more and more constipated I was forced to resort to the daily use of the most approved alteratives and cathartics prescribed by the medical profesP jn; which however, seldom produced an evacuation more than once or twice a week—and not even then without resorting to one or two injections before any relief. Possibly you can imagine—I hope you may never experience—my sufferings from Piles and otherwise, in consequence of costiveness and partial paralysis of the rectum. Euch was my condition when by the advise of my physician I commenced the trial of your Kidney-Wort some three weeks ago. Since then have taken nothing else excepting one small bluebill. Now by the use of one or two spoonsfull each week of the the Kidney-Wort, tho evacuations are sullicient without sufliering. Such a medicine is of priceless value, and 1 hope you will spare no pains in making known its virtues (or the relief of suffering humanity. Respectfully Yours, nelson Fairchild.

IIEAT AND SICKNESS.
During the hot and sultry weather an unusual amount of sickness prevails in overy community, especially among females and children, caused by the fermenting miasma gas or nitrogenous matter floating in the air, arising from decaying vegetation. This bad airafiVcts everything we eat, and engenders in it a si tni-fermentation, which, when taken into the system is like leaven, and operates on the whole, starting in the bowels and soon producing a violent fennenta tien. causing diarrlura and dissentery. One of the most striking impressions
of Genoa is the profusion of statuary and carving which meets you everywhere. Most of the palaces have fine work on the front, and it becomes more elaborate and imposing inside, where magnificent halls and massive stairways, whose entrance is very frequently a pair of colossal, crouching li'.us, lead you from
room to room and floor to floor. In the streets the very walls of the
common houses, particularly at the cor tiers and over the doorways, at odd angles and curious uiches over little shops you find the images of an inuumcrublt army of saints, the elligies often set u; in the fashion of a little altar. Through the hotels, banks and public buildings ot every kind are the statues of great men,
modern and old.
All these, besides tho churches and parks and cemeteries and public gardens ,are crowded with rare and costly works It is tliis wealth of marble, pure and white, and shaped with exquisite art, that has justly won for this city the well merited title, “Genoa la Bupcrba.” Nwort 1’on solo uhii«m8 *>r Duty Performed.

The other day, over at the Alameda baths, a timid and retiring looking man waited until the superintendent was disengaged and then said to him: “] do hate to give any one trouble, but have you a long stick or pole of any kind you could lend me?” “No, sir; 1 told you so ten minutes ago,” snapped the overdriven official “So you did,” replied the man; “but I thought I’d just ask once more. 1 guess, now, Fro done my duty in the matter. Don’t you think so?” “What matter?” What on earth are

olden times.
It says, at starting, that talking machines are no novelty. In 1783 an M. de Kempelin constructed an apparatus which answered “ clearly and distinctly enough several questions. The voice is sweet and agreeable. There is but the letter ‘ r’ which it pronounces lispingly, and with a certain hardness. When its answer is not understood it repeats it slower; and if required to speak a third time, it repeats it again, but in a tone of im-
patience and vexation.”
Mayfair refers, among other things, to a marvel of mechanism, a toy invented for Louis XIV. when a boy: “ A small chariot was drawn by two horses. Inside the chariot was a ladv proceeding to court. 81ic was attended by her coachman, footman and page. When the toy was placed upon the table, the coachman smacked his whip, the horses started off in a trot, the motion of their legs imita ted to the life, and the equipage journeyjd to the end of the table, where it turn-
