Whenever there is a public meeting affecting in any way the interests of our schools, do you be sure and he present, and use ail the influence you can command in favor of improving them, and thus making our beautiful town attractive to strangers because of its superior advantages for the education of children. Invite the teachers to your homes, and let them see that you are interested in them and are watching every day their work. Visit the schools frequently and let teachers aud scholars understand that you regard school-life as of great consequence.

The moral atmosphere of all tho large cities is more or less tainted with crime. This is inevitable, because the centres of population will always be resorted to as affording the best opportunities for pursuing the criminal profession. White this is true as relates to robbery, burglary, incendiarism, garroting andalonglist of petty offences, the difl'erence is very marked between most of the older and the newer communities, as relates to the habitual use of deadly wcaixms. On the frontiers, encounters with the rifle, Bowieknife and pistol have always been common. It would not be expected however, that such things could he in an old municipality, supposed to he complete in its organization, as the city of New Orleans; and yet, here is the account given by one of her own local papers, the

‘The cost of keeping cattle per year is about $1,50 per head, or $1,500 |>or 1,000. Four men with twelve to sxteen head of horses, will tend a herd of 1,500. The profits are about as follows: Beeves, p< r head, cost $15; running expenses, $1,50 sell at $22, with a profit of 32 per cent. Profit on cows costing $13,50 per head; cost of keeping, $1,50, $15. Increase of calves, 75 per cent., worth $5 per head. Net profit, 23 per cent. Ou a mixed herd the beeves soM will pay expenses, and the increase will double itself in three years. A discount j is made on a herd, of ten per cent, fori losses. The profit on a mixed herd is
about twenty per cent.”
It says there is a total of cattle in the Pan Handle country of about 129,000 head, and that it is fair to calculate that the increase this year from the present herds will average not less than fifty per cent, of the entire number.
