(Bridgeport Farmer.) The other evening a gentleman boarder in one of our genteel boarding houses was confortably reading in his room, the door open, when, from the foot of the stairs, he heard a young lady boarder with whom he was on terms of free and playful intimacy, call:— “Mr. , throw me your night-gown,
please?”
Sure that he must have misunderstood
her, he called:— “Throw you what?”
“Your night-gown, please.”
He was startled. There was no mistaking her meaning, and believing that some new joke was on foot among the second-floor occupants which would seem to justify such a strange request on the part of the lady, he took a fresh night shirt from his bureau and tossed it over the ballusters. It was received with an ejaculation that sounded little like
thanks, and all was silent.
Next morning on descending he discovered his properly at the foot of the
stairs, where it seemed to be doing duty i„.„„ „„„ as an impromptu door mat. For a mi ,1,en can (1 °
ment he inwardly pronounced it very shabby treatment of such an immaculate article by the fair borrower, and returned to bis room with it; but took his place at the tabic in his usual good hu-
mor.
“Well, how did it work?” he inquired, looking over expectantly at the lady. She had omitted to give him her usual cordial salutations, and now her eyes were fixed ujs,n her plate, and her expression of face but a shade lighter than
a thunder cloud.
“Did the joke pan out a success?” he
pleasantly persisted.
All the most terrible and deadly weapons of war have been thrown completely in the shade by the new Gatling gun which was exhibited on the 27th of March at the offices of Sir W. Armstrong, the manufacturer, in St. George’s, Westminster, before a number of experts. This fearful weapon is capable of tiring a thousand shots per minute and kills a man or a horse at a mile range. It has a compact appearance, can be taken to pieces and easily errried about, can be j applied to military and naval use, and the mechanism of it is simplicity itself; the revolving band has two compartments, into which, as they whirl round, metal cartridges drop from a tall, oblong case fixed over the center of the barrel. At each turn of the handle ten shots are fired, and their dispersion is accomplished by a sliding apparatus. The size of shot in diflerent calibre guns of this class ranges from musket balls to half pounders. By the use of this implement three

single men. A quarter of a million of dollars is said to have been spent on experiments necessary to perfect the gun, which is now declared by every military
expert to bo a complete success.

Not Exactly His Unt* (Virginia City Chronicle.] Last evening after the performance was over at the show a young man called on Chiarini and said he wanted to see him on private busiiic®*. The old veteran took him into his office and received him with his usual politeness. “I came all the way from Carson to see the show, and I’d like to join,” said the
young man.
“On, I see,” said the showman; “youj are a well-formed, heallhy-looking young I fellow, and I'd like to encourage such as! you.” The youth’s face brightened. “You don t chew, smoke, or drink, I

Fifth District—Vacancy to be filled by the State Central Committee. The platform adopted w - as quite lengthy, and we present the following synopsis: The first five resolutions declare that the people through their government should resume control of the currency, which has been delegated by the Hepublicans to a moneyed oligarchy, and that all currency, whether metallic or paper, should be full legal tender, and of sufficient volume to do the business of the country’. The sixth and seventh declare that we are in the midst of a revolution which has for its object the rescue of the producing classes from the oppression of an interest bearing debt. The eighth, nineth, and tenth demand the payment of the londed debt as fast as it becomes due, and the prohibition ol another dollar of debt, either state or national. The eleventh and twelfth demand for labor the divine right to enjoy its legitimate fruit, which should be secured by
law.
The thirteenth demands that public lands shall be held for homes for actual cultivators. The fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth denounce those who in public position secure illegitimate gains; they are unmitigated thieves and should be punished as other criminals. The seventeenth demands economy in public affairs. The eighteenth demands that the soldiers shall be paid according to the contract. The nineteenth demands the immediate passage of the law to equalize soldiers’ bounties. The twentieth declares suffrage the inalienable right of every citizen of the United States. The twenty-first favors the passage of the licagan inter-Stato commerce bill. The twenty-second opposes the importation of Chinese servile labor. The twenty-third denounces the arrest and imprisonment of American citizens for exercising the right of free speech. Mr A. T. Keightley was a member of the committee on resolutions, and Mr. R. |M. Hazelett is the member ot the State Cei al Committee from this district.
