Tin: Republicans of this Congressional District met at Martinsville on Wednesday, to select a State Central Committee man and delegates to the Chicago Con vention.
Entered at the Postoflice, Greencastle fnd., as second-class mail matter.
Jewett has started a literary bureau to further his designs in the Presidential race—Mr. Jewett is using theTilden tactics with the judgment of an expert. One by one they drop by the wayside —’tis now said that linyard is olf the track and denies the allegation that he is a candidate for the Presidential nomina-
tion.
The fight for the liepublican nomination for the Presidency seems to bo narrowed down between Grant and Elaine, and the chances are that General Harrisen, of this State, will nominated for Vice Presidedt, no matter who is given the first place on the ticket. At tVashington, on Monday night, the talk of the town was as to what or whether there is any significance in the taking of the Convention to Cincinnati. While it is claimed that Tilden has sustained a defeat, a great many think 'hat if he is not to be the nominee he is for •lewett for a second choice. Unquestionably the influence of Jewett secured the Convention for Cincinnati, and there are not but a few who think that Tilden was asecretally. If he was he played his game with such shrewdness that has lo.t but little scent behind except in such quarters as presume to know everything and seldom know any thing. From Washington comes a special .dated
Of interest as showing the drift of political seiitim.nt we give our readers J this special from New York. Of the 54 delegates to the Republican State Convention chosen here this ereni.ig, the Grant men claim fifty, and they probably arc right in their estimates. In one district only, the Seventeenth, was there any kind of a fight. There the Sherman men —led by an Appraiser in the Customhouse—led a few followers in an attempt to get a Sherman delegation, but e Grant men heat him by 371 majority on a poll of fiOO votes. In a majority of the districts the vote was light. Sherman, so far as can be learned, did not get a delegate. In the fifteenth District, where two Anti-Grant delegates were chosen, the Grant men were badly beaten. The four 4nti-Grant delegates chosen do not say for whom they propose to vote, other than that they are against John Sherman. ThoRrooklyn delegates chosen a few days ago are for Grant, with the exception of one RIaino district. TheConvcntions held in the country within a few days indicate a stronger feeling in Blaine’s favor than had been looked for. Competent authority said to-night that they would have one hundred and
fifty votes in the Convention.

Godman the amount of shortage claimed was as follows: For the year 1874, $3,002.42; for 1875. $486,2.59; for 1876, $7,165.54; and for 1871,15.902.58. This is a total shortage of $20,957.13. Considerable difficulty was experienced at once when efforts to effect a settlement were made. The bondmen by their counsel presented questions that raised legal doubts as to their liability. There was little or no question as to their liability in 1874 and 1875, as the statute of limitation released them from all liability for those years. The contest was as to tho latter term. The sureties claimed that the statute released them from 1876 also, and they would bo liable only for the last year of hts last term. This amount was $5,902.58. After a number of meetings between the Commissioners and Godman and his bondmen, it was found that no compromise could bo made, although the sureties made a proposition to pay obout fifly cents on the dollar. Tho Commissioners ordered the County Attorney to
