was well known to the journalistic and literary circles of San Francisco as one of the most luxurious apartments in the

it was here that he wrote many of those marvelous sketches of California life which have made his reputation on Ixith sides of the Atlantic, and stamped him as a genius of no ordinary rank. The room in Sacramento street should properly lx- called his home, S* it met his requirements far better than any place he has since occupied. His private residence was at San Rafael, a short distance from San Francisco, and he occasionally did some of his work there, but not often. Mr Harte depends entirely iipin his moods, and will write only when he feels thus inclined. He composes with great care, and often tears up his manuscript when nearly completed and begins anew. This accounts for the clearness of his writings. Mr. Harte was born in Albany, N. Y., forty years ago where he spent his boyhood. In 1854 he moved with the tide of emigration to California. He tried mining and school teaching with no conspicuous success, and finally drifted to San Francisco. Being a printer he found employment on the Gold Era, a flourishing weekly at that time. While working at the printer’s case he found time to write some sketches drawn from his experiences in the mining regions, and with trembling hesitation he submitted one of them to the editor. This latter personage was a bluff, hearty, genial diarnond-in-the-rwugh; he now resides at Flushing, near New York City, and one of Ids proudest Ixiasts is that he conducted the newspaper that brought out Bret Harte and Murk Twain. Now Lydia Crane was not naturally inclined to be querulous or selfish; she had been duly converted in the progress of a revival in London and joined the church during Parson Beach’s lifetime. She read her Bible daily, said her prayers—I use the phrase advisedly—and was a punctual attendant on all the means of grace. She was the head and front of the church sewing society and Secretary of the Foreign Mission Circle, yet in the living of her life she bad become, at the age of 35, fretful, self-centered, opinionated, domineering; but perfectly certain that she was an exemplary C’hristain. Charity, sympathy, tenderness, do not grow in such a solitude as hers; it is not g<xid for a man or woman to be alone; and if to be a Christain is to wear the image of Christ, as the gospel seems to imply, there was very little obvious likeness in Miss Lydia to the Master wliose

name she bore.

Yet she was a thoroughly honest woman, anxious alxive all things to do right; ready to give every “object” that impelled the long-handled contribution boxes, with deacons at the other end, through

The Great Soullnvest. [Toledo ill.uk’ ] It is announced that some capituliaks in St. fsiiiis are |)re|iariiig to build a railroad from Sail Antonio, Texas, to j Lerado, on the Ixirdcr of Mexico. 'Ihis ! enterprise is one that should coinmeud itself to every busines- man in tho coun-

try.

Without carrying facilities it is imptsihlc to build up a trade anywhere. Mexico is rich in vegetable and mineral wealth, has a considerable population whose wants ure constantly increasing, and ninny of them must Ik* supplied by imports from other countries. The United States is the most natural source to draw from, but it eannot lx' done to any great exte nt without railroad facilities. It is for the benefit of the commercial interests of the country that this enter-

prise should be encouraged.

The story is told of a man who bad a large number of pigs in a |s ii near hi? house, and made it his practice to go out every evening and "stir them up” with a <‘1 uli, to the great annoyance of the pigs and the disturbance of the neighlxirs. One of these remonstrated with him one morning, asking why lie treated Ida pigs in such a cruel manner. “Bcmiusc, be
