A Mexican Woman** I.ove.

When a young Mexican woman falls iu love there is no nonsense about it, no thought of the consequences, no inerce-; nary object in view. The world becomes to her a scene of enchantment, and the ielol of her affections a seraphic licing especially created for her worship. Her absorption into its existence is complete. She revels in the atmosphere of platonic love as a lady-bird of Paradise revels in the tropical ether, and as innocent, guileless, and happy. To her, life is a delieioifc dream, anel only one adored object existing in all that beautiful dreamland. >She is Eve in the Garden of Eden,; and woe to the ser|*:ut (s woman)who dares to intrude within the sacred realms of that garden. How subdued and saintlike is the expression "f her face; how dove-like the cooing and the wooing of

this happy, happy creature.

Who would think that beneath all this the tigress lurks, and is only waiting to spring upon some hated rival? Let her ; apjiear and then the enchantment is ruthlessly broken, the saintess no longer exists. All is changed. There is a marvelous transformation into the machetera, who, maddened with jealousy, seeks ven-

“I was surprised,” remarked Mr. Sidi s, ! “to hear tlie word so univeisally mispronounced by the members of the IVachers’ National ('onveution, which met rceent- ; ly in this city.” The word telegraphy should l>e pronounced te-leg’-ra-phy, not j tel-e-graph-y. Squalor, frequently pronounced “squoller,” should receive the long sound a, as in mate—squa'-lor. Tlie word vagary should !«• divided into three syllables, va-ga-ry, with the accent on tlie a in the second syllable. In recess the accent falls on the last syllable, aud is pronounced re-cess. The n in government is too often omitted, as the word is pronounced guv'-ernment. Enervate is pronounced e-ner-vate, not en-er-vate. Indisputable i- pronounced Isith in-dis'-putablcand in-dis-pu'-table.but tlie former mode of pronunciation is the correct one. The word isolate should be pronounced iz'-o-late (the a as in mate), not i-so-late. Allopathy is pronounced nl-lop'-a-thy, not al lo-patli-y. Rise, when a noun, is pronounced “rice,” but when a verb, it is pronounced rize. The last word referred to by the expositor of correct pronunciation was 1 laugh, which created considerable merriment, so much that the listeners hilled and they lolled and they larfed, when the proper tiling for them to have done was to have struck tlie sound of “a” as iu far, and they would have been just right.

At this pans, tlie small dam.-el who had seemingly been wholly inattentive to what was being said, turned toward the witness and .sharply inquired, “Well, then, how did you get through?” The remark came out tit pertly and from such an unexpected source that the judge could not refrain from laughing and tlie jury and spectators were mildly convulsi'd, while the witness went on to tell how

more or less steadily five years later. With men the chances do not fall below 1 to 100 until the age of 40 is reached. Then it is 1 in 60, and after that but 1 in 200. Marriages occur, however, every year until 66 is reached, then on alternate years to 62, and after that comes but one, which is at tlie age of 70. “Of the 1,000 women in the list, 84 were widows, and of these 84, 14 had been divorced. Of the 14, one remarried the man from whom she had been divorced. Of the men but three had been divorced. How many of them were widowers there are no means of telling. “Of the 1,000 marriages 187 were between parties living iu the same house. Whenever a man marries under such cir-

He was not probably looking over his list of lady acquaintances for a wife, and his selection was not the result of pure choice—of the opinion that she was the l»est of all the women he knew to make a wife. Tlie two happened to he thrown in close contact, the fire of youth was ignited and it blazed up, ami they were married. This figure can not, however, be taken as in any degree correct to show the numIter of chance marriages. Perhaps ninetenths of all tlie marriages are chance. But the chances are very strong that these were all chance, pure chance, and

nothing but chance.

The number of men being greater than the number of women, every woman ought to find a husband; but the disturbing causes which induce men to forego marriage, such as an inability, as they suppose, to support a wife, a preference to remain unmarried, and so on, throw the elumces, as a mattcrof

fact, the other way.

“For the 12 months ending Oct. !il past the total number of marriages in this city was 6,159. The favorite month in which to marry is November; the next are May, October and March, which appear to be equally desirable; December is nearly as much so; next are February, April and June, while January ami September come behind these, and tho least popular of all is August.

we fear, before our colleges are emancipated. The true method—though, we regret to say, Massachusetts has not chosen it—will in the end be found to be the one adopted by the State of Michigan— to connect our colleges as closely as pos7 on sible by every bond of alliance with our public free schools. It will prove the surest safeguard, not only from the danger of sectarian control, but from the danger, perhaps equally great, of the denomination of opinionated and irrespon-

sible cliques.

The nene fita of Sing;in^.

Singing is one of the most healthful

in which men, women and can engage. The medical

Wochenachrift, of St. Petersburg, has an article based upon exhaustive researches made by Prof. Monassein during the autumn of 1878, when he examined 222 singers ranging Ixdween the ages of j 'J and 63. He laid chief weight upon the growth and absolute circumference ! of tlie cheat, upon the comparative re-! latino of the hitter to tho tallness of the

the lips of young girls: “Awfully jolly,” “Immense,” “Ain’t he a tumbler?” ‘ lie has a great deal of dog on to-day,” "Good form,” “Awfully fiistraU 1 ,” “Give me a mount, won’t you?”—moaning, "Will you lend me your (>oiiy?” “Jennie’s having a circus to-night," “She dances true, “Didn’t wo have a stationary fling, though?”—meaning, let us suppose, a stupid evening; “Thanks.” “Quite too awfully handsome,” “Pitch on your hat and let’s go for a picturesque; all these, and alas! many more expressions borrowed from England and invented here, drop from lips which should never condescend to drop anything but pearls and diamonds. These phrases are not witty—they moan nothing. Neither are those phrases at all funny which crop tmt of popular songs. “Pinafore” has become a terrible nuisance in this wav The “whoa Emma,” “Walker” and other catchwords which arise in English slums
