There is considerable sickness prevailing throughout tlie country, principally n-

remain about two weeks.
County surveyor J. K. O'Brien line been employed by ibe com miss.,ners of Owen county to do a lot of engineering. The coni in issoners evidently believe in getting the best, which they certainly have in this insianre, ns Mr O'Brien hsi achieved an enviable reputation as a civil engineer Tlo- tinest lot of oak timber that ever passed over the Motion line is being loaded at till-i place for shipment to New 'i ork, where it will be manufactured into veneering, The largest oak iree in either Owen or Putnam county was shipped from here this week. The tree made two 1? foot logs and one 13 foot log without knots or limbs, and averaged about 1800 feet to each log. Fret and Charlie Cummings, Rii»s Marlin, Shorty Rogers and Cun Query are the veteran log-haulers who are delivering the logs, the entire lot being ot unusual si/.-' and every log free from blemish. During the thunder storm Monday nigi t two line cows were killed b\ lightning on the Cooper farm south of town Mrs David Hall who lias been dangerously ill of lung fever is in a fair way of recovery. The Weklockehs.
At the appointed time last night the Daughters of Wedlock convened at their usual meeting place, with a very much larger attendance than at their Inst meet ine. At the meeting last night there ware not only virgins but a large number of fatfair, gay, rollicking frollicking widows none of whom were over 20 years of age notwithstanding the bare insinuation of tlmt beastly old Mogul, who, by the way, delights to have the descriptive adjecttve i ‘'Grand” prefixed to his name. Toe High Priestess called the meeting to order with a single tap of her dainty gavel. She then asked what success Die sisters had in their campaign, and if any one had any plan to suggest Dial would suppress the cunning Mogul. Miss Fannie Fast arose and said that she had been working in a quiet way and hud completely fascinated, infatuated ind charmed three of the Mogul's brotherhood. and that as cold and cruel law prevented in,.rry ing all three of Di in she was in a desperate dilemma to determine which she bad better take. Upon tins statement Widow Kelchum arose and desired Miss Fannie to give a descriptor! o Iter gallants, which was given as follows. Mrs Fannie sai l: ‘ jfhe first that I caught was that dear, darling, dandy Dode, who for his particular type of masculine beauty stands without a peer. His deep, dreamy sky blue eyes are incomparable and suits his rich blonde completion to perfection, and his elegant hirsute appendage is of a color exactly to match his complexion. His scholitrslpp and superb gentlemanly hearing will compare favorably with that of the Count of Monte C’risto or Sir William Wallace and as to voice, lor singing, he would discount a male nightingale. Anottier devotee is the worthy Worth, who at this time Is pushing his suit at. a fearful gait. Now Worth is a Hell(e)so lo speak among the hand, and he lias Die en tire confidence of that big 'Gull. Worlti too, is a comely lad, but his style of beauty is very different from that of the item dandy Dode, who is of s'lort stature ami slender build, while worthy Worth is o/ long stature and a ‘ soggy” build anil a very pronounced blonde, With proper training he would he a champion heavyweight miller under the Marquis of Queens bury rules and I hope In will not become jealous of Dandy Dode for if be did and should give him a '‘right upper cut” Dode would laud some wliere near Kalamazoo. The last but not Die least of my worshipers is the model Mort Jessup. Now you that know him, know that he is just too cute lor any thing. He is a tall handsome brunette who would suit Die fancy of the most fastidious wedlocker in the hall. His skill in music makes him rank with the old Italian masters. Three nights ot each week 1 ant wafted away into the rosy realms of rest by a delightful combination pf harmonious sou mis Dial emeiiate from Mori's larynx as he Inisss in a rosy bower by my chamber window. This is the
chorus uf his tong:
'Sleep dear Fannie sleep dream of love and
me,
Fori love thee host of all thy lovers three, There's worth Worth and Dandy Dode to i cull. So tak ‘ your model Mort, and rob the Grand Mogul.”
The Priestess complimented Miss Fannie very highly upon her won erful success ami advised tier to select Die one of her lovers that she thought had the shortest lease on life, and that she would probably take them all in rotation. Several other ladies reported they had started a system of flirtations witli the bachelors and were firmly of the opinion that they would have a beau in low in a short time. The H. P. called attention to the fact that there were plenty of widowers who could easily be caught and recommended that the short statesman and disciple ol Solon, who dwells in the Flats be besieged and captured. She also inenDom-d the beautiful Conrad Job. and sahl he would fall an easy prey The Priestess then turned her iiDcntinn to
the Mogul and spoke as follows:
"The very idea of that beastly old parody that burlesque on man; that mangy . old fossil; that freak of nature, that denominates bimsell Die Grand Mogul, calling me ‘ the little old weaz -n-fuced, waspish telltale woman, aged amazon, etc, and referring to us as “nzzle-headed gum-chewing nymphs” is enough lo condemn Minin Die estimation of resnectable bachelors. If the old monster thinks lor a moment he can disconcert us by having recourse to all the vile vituperations of a Billuigsi'ale Bum, he is much mistaken. Thirlv five years angling for a husband!!! The old sot! with six quarts of the tluid extract of malt in him! And two quarts of moonshine mountain dew!!! I tried to chain hint!!! Why he is so ugly, a glance from him would give one the horrors, or slop the interest on a note. To smell his breath would give you the delirium tremens, to hear hint talk would paraliyze the auditory nerve 1 n short be is so low down ill the deptiis of social and moial degradation Dial if a lever 10O0 miles long were attached to him and Die Rocky mountains >s a fulcrum, uiui Die united strength of all the ancels in Heaven above and all Die demons down under the sea appl ed they could not raiie hint to Die cnnimon level of the condemned, (cheers) Now dear sisters continue in the good work and in n short time wcwill lutve all the desirable material the old fraud has. Here the willow Kelchem aro-e and said that she had a plan. She would trap fur the Mogul; that she would use her natural charms as halt; and if she failed it would he her first time as she had already had six husbands. She said she would take Die old hound for the sake of obliging her sisters and thus disrupt Die organization ami she promised to tell at the next meeting how she would treat him. The meeting adjourned to
meet September 1.
