'Adeste Fidelis' Translated Into 120 Languages! “Adeste Fidelis” (O Come, All Ye Faithful) is one of the best-known Christmas carols in the world. It has been translated into more than 120 languages and dialects. Some scholars believe it may have been known to Francis of Assisi and that

it might have been sung while the people gathered around the first creches.

affirmed that the carol changed through the years, and was popular in Germany and France as early as the 17th century. The earliest recorded words and melody of “Adeste Fidelis” are found in “Cantus Diversi”, a collection of hymns (1750) by John Francis Wade.

us “Cantique de Noel” or “O, Holy Night.” American composers began early to fill the roster of Christmas favorites. In 1730, Charles Wesley, younger brother of John

Wesley, founder of the Methodist denomination, wrote “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing.” “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” was composed in 1849 by Edmund H. Sears.

The carols, hymns and songs that so enrich our Christmas season today are the products of many countries and many centuries. This beautiful music came to America with the early settlers. The Germans brought Luther’s hymn for children, “Away In A Manger.” “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” came from England. The French gave

Among the more popular aspects of a secular celebration is the Kissing Ball. Many years ago every home featured at least one of these beautiful decorations, hung from an archway or chandelier. In Spain, the Christmas candle is placed over the doors of the faithful.

sometimes a pomander, sometimes a blown egg, sometimes a ball of cotton. Plastic foam is the favorite material today. The ball is brightly painted or gilded, wrapped with ribbon and braid, and set with mock jewels, sparkling beads and sequins. A ribbon suspends two or three in place and a sprig of mistletoe is secured at the top. Young ladies who pass beneath may expect a kiss from some daring swain who waits nearby.

Holiday spirits! There is no minimizing of danger from intersection accidents. You can avoid intersection accidents by being alert, which means, not to mix alcohol if driving. 44 r/ r of all accidents in urban areas happen at intersections. Reduced visibility, and reduced traction, are the main bugaboos of winter driving,, says the Safe Winter Driving League. The League distributes information on how to avoid winter driving hazards.

Winter weather makes it even more difficult to find guiding street names on the signs at intersections. Los \ngeles is reducing accidents \ y posting name signs half a block ahead of the street so drivers don’t have to take their eyes off their driving as they approach intersections. Darkness compounds the sighting of street signs. Other cities, including Los Angeles, are installing reflective signs that glow brilliantly in headlights. Traction on snow or ice increases with either snow tires or chains. With snow tires on ice at 30 m.p.h. you still need 392 feet to stop. But, chains will stop you in 173 feet. However, some people don’t like the clunk-clunk of chains on dry portions of the street. If you’re one of them, then you’ve got to be extra cautious, and proceed at snails pace, if necessary. As for the danger “ingredient” holiday spirits, keep your exuberance at a safe medium. The old rule of “if you’re driving, don’t drink ... if you’re drinking, don’t drive” still holds good. This holiday, be safe, not sorry. Live to enjoy a very happy New Year!

>• Bay berry candles, which are said to foretell good luck for the coming year if they burn bright at Christmas, were first made by early settlers in America. They dipped bayberry branches in wax and burned them during the holidays. v The story is told that over a hundred years ago, a parish priest in Salsburg, Austria, returning late one night from administering last rites to a dying woman, was awed by the particular majesty of the still, sparkled-with-stars night; he went home, wrote the lovely, haunting words of ‘‘Silent Night, Holy Night.” With his

organist, Franz Gruber, playing the great music on his guitar, the Father, Joseph Mohr, first introduced the strains of this popular hymn to a small congregation in Austria.

☆ A churchman, John Pierpont, composed the gay Christmas song, “Jingle Bells,” which has been popular for over a century. The number of mince pies you taste at Christmas indicates the number of happy months you’ll have during the coming year, according to an old English belief. For three centuries following His birth, Christ’s nativity was celebrated at various times in January, March, April, May, September, and October by Christian group-;.
