—Wedding from the church. However, Thurmond hired a private film company to produce a complete sound film recording of the wedding. The radiant Miss Moore, who reigned as Miss South Carolina in 1965, wore a white ivory shade silk and satin dress with heirloom buckles and rosepoint lace. Her ankle length skirt fellto a cathedral train with matching rosepoint lace. She also wore a mantilla that belonged to her great-grand-mother. Thurmond, a conservative Republican, wore a conservative dark blue suit with a red tie. Miss Moore met Thurmond in 1966 when she worked as a summer intern in his Washington office. For Thurmond, a physical fitness enthusiast, it was his second marriage. His first wife, the former Jean Crouch of Elko, died of brain cancer in 1960. Appointment ST. WASHINGTON (UPI)—I am told the leaders of certain groups espousing equality for women are unhappy because President-elect Nixon did not name any ladies to his cabinet. This may be one of the reasons why Nixon arranged for the wives of his cabinet members to receive security

clearances.

Officially, the cabinet wives will not be a part of the administration. But the clearances will enable them to discuss classified matters with their husbands. And perhaps among

themselves.

Hence there probably will be a strong feminine influence on, if not actually in, the cabinet. Such an arrangement may placate female militants to some extent. But I am wondering what effect it will have on the home lives of the cabinet members. Hero worship plays a big part in many marriages. A wife likes to look up to her husband. It helps subdue that nagging suspicion that she has made a dreadful mistake. A husband, in turn, likes to see admiration shining in his wife’s eyes. That usually being the only place he is likely to see admiration shining. Maintaining the hero image ordinarily requires a certain amount of deception, husbands being what they are nowadays. A husband must keep some things to himself. Otherwise, his wife will become totally disillu-

sioned.

Because they have a security cover, high government officiais find it easier than most husbands to create an aura of omniscience. Their wives may read criticism in the newspapers and ask what they did wrong. In which case, they have a perfect response. ‘Tm not at liberty to discuss it with you because it involves classified material/' they can say. “But if you knew the background you could see that I handled it with my usual skill and keen insight, backed by a wealth of experience and sound judgement.” Thus the marriage is saved. It remains to be seen whether a government official whose

Members of the Nixon cabinet may be such extraordinary men they can impress their wives

Under the new arrangement, it’s going to be difficult for them to lie like the rest of us.
