Highway Commission receives bridge bids
INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — An eligible low bid of about $1.3 million was received Tuesday for a bridge over the Wabash River and Indiana 43 on U.S. 52 near Lafayette in Tippecanoe County. The project was the only one of any size included in those for which bids were opened Tuesday by the Indiana State Highway Commission. The bids will be reviewed and contracts awarded later this week. Low bidder on the Wabash River bridge was Smith & Johnson, Inc., Indianapolis, for $1,280,499. Other projects for which eligible low bids were received: Clinton County — Bridge over Sugar Creek on Indiana 38, Scientist Believes Flying Saucers Imagination NEW YORK i UPI • —A leading space scientist says there is only a "minute possibility” that unidentified flying objects have ever been sighted. Dr. Robert Jastrow. director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, told a youth .'•emir.ar at the Explorers Club that there are some trillion ealaxies containing several billion :tars each and the distance between them is so great it is almost impossible for beings in inter-planetary vehicles to stumble across us. "There is only a microscopic chance somebody will stop off and visit us out of curiosity,” he maintained. He said he was forced to the conclusion that sightings of UFOs must be attributed to atmospheric electricity or imagination, but that one must not close one’s eyes to the possibility of their existence. He said he expected only in 200 to 300 years that earthlings will become preoccupied with erecting transmitters to send signals into inter-stellar space, which could be used to guide visitors from space. As far as exploring out of the solar system, he said it would be possible only when powers of energy are available to achieve half the speed of light. "We will go to places like the moon to find precursors of living organisms,” Jastro said. “We will learn much from the lunar rocks brought back by the astronauts.” The Best For Mom ST. LOUIS (UPI) — New mothers resting in the St. Mary’s Hospital Maternity Ward have their choice of filet mignon or broiled lobster tail. The delicious main course is part of a gourmet meal served to each new mother once during her stay in the hospital. Also on the menu are turtle soup, green beans almondine, baked Alaska and creme de menthe parfait. Dutch Attraction THE HAGUE (UPI) — The Madurodam minitown, one of the main tourist attractions here, had more than 1 million visitors, nearly 60 per cent of them foreign, in the 1968 summer season.

Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF A BIG LONDON Sunday newspaper announced a contest for aspiring young writers, offering substantial cash prizes for stories submitted. George Bernard Shaw, who considered the judges incompetent, sent in a new story under an assumed name. Sure enough he got it back forthwith, marked, ‘‘Mediocre. You will never be a professional writer." • • • H. Allen Smith tells of the day his Uncle Fred climbed a tall mountain and found a huge rock poised at its crest. He worked with might and main for hours and finally dislodged it It went hurtling down the mountainside, headed straight for town, crashed through the supermarket and the First National Bank, and finally came to rest against an oak tree in the rear of that institution Folks came rushing from all sides to see what all the excitement was about, but Uncle Fred, arriving on the double; pushed them aside to scrutinize the rock carefully through a magnifying glass. Finally he straightened up. and announced. "Nope. No moss." * » * Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes was a ripe 92 years old when Franklin D. Roosevelt became President in 1933 and his memory wasn't what is used to be. A few days after FDR had been inaugurated, he paid a courtesy visit on the venerable jurist.
