Women’s View
By GAY PAULEY UPI Women’s Editor NEW YORK (UPI)-If you receive a Christmas card featuring an owl or a robin, don't think there were bats in the belfry of the card printing plant. Both owl and robin have places in Yule legends. Owls have an extensive history connected with Christmas. The history is wrapped up in two legends, both preserved on Christmas cards in the Hallmark Cards historical collection. Like Rudolph According to the poem on the card, the owl is somewhat like “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer." In part, the poem reads; “He has a friend, a great white owl, who has such wisdom 'neath his cowl, he through the night could safely go." The second owl legend, from another card of the 1800’s, takes owls back to just before the first Christmas when owls, as well as other birds, loved the day and shunned the night. The legend explains why the owl wakes at night. According to the legend, the wise men, as they traveled to Bethlehem, called all the thirds of the forests through which they passed to follow them to greet the newborn savior. From all over the countryside birds joined the wise men for the journey to the holy city. Except the owl, that is. He briefly woke from slumber to see the confusion around him, then went back to sleep after asking anyone who could hear—Who, who, who is it that bids me to follow?” As legends go, since that time Christian holiday degenerated into gift-giving There is always, at this time of year, a lot of hand-wringing among pious folks about the difficulty of “keeping Christ in Christmas.” The great Christian holiday has degenerated—so the refrain goes—into a commercial orgy of gift-giving. Department stores wear out Christmas carols before churches get to them. Santa Claus has usurped the place of the Babe in the manger. And so on. Well, perhaps. But when we acknowledge all that's wrong with modern Christmas customs, can it really be said that Christ has been crowded out of His own birthday celebration? I think not. Christ will be in Christmas as long as Christmas makes children happy. Jesus loved children. There are many anecdotes in the Gospels which reveal that children thought highly of Him, too. They followed Him around, and He was never too busy to stop and talk to them. It's impossible to conceive of Jesus being affronted because His birthday has become a child-centered holiday. But all we know about Him makes clear that he would be greatly distressed if some children— however few— got only broken hearts for Christmas. That’s why those who revere His name should do all in their power to make sure no child wakes up on Christmas morning in a home barren of toys and treats. Jesus also cared for the aged, the lonely, the sick, the maladjusted, the unloved. So Christ will be in Christmas as long as it's a day on which richly • blessed families find ways to share their happiness with others who aren’t so fortunate. Finally, it can be said that Christ will be in Christmas as long as people display at this season loyalty to their families, affection for their friends, and gratitude toward postmen, newspaper carriers, cleaning women, waiters, elevator operators and others whose yearround service makes life more convenient and pleasant. Keeping Christ in Christmas is not so much a matter of doing different things, but of doing the traditional things in a spirit of love. For where love is, Christ is. the night
Now the robin, more familiar a harbinger of spring, gets into the Christmas act for another reason, according to the card historians. Not Alone According to the robin legend,
the Holy Family was not alone in taking refuge in the stable in Bethlehem. Perched on a rafter, a small brown robin watched as the three magi presented their gifts to the newborn Christ child.
The robin seemed to understand that something unusual was happening. After the departure of the kings, when the little family was asleep, the robin noticed the stable’s fire was dying.
In a valiant effort to revive the flickering embers, he swooped down to fan the fire. Hovering above the coals he flapped his wings, fanning the embers to life. As the fire burned brighter, flames singed
the robin’s breast, scorching his brown feathers a brilliant red gold. Through the night he fanned the fire to keep the child warm. Ever since, the robin has worn a red vest symbolizing his gift.
