By DAVID NVDICK UPI Education Specialist The guidance counsellor in a high school is a most important person in the individualization of the program. He or she is the one who can help and advise each individual student and the parent. The guidance counsellor

should not always make the decisions but should try to help the individual arrive at his own understanding. The guidance counsellor can be the difference between success and failure of a student. What are some of the ways in which a counsellor can be

helpful? Should a student be in a general, commercial, vocational or college preparatory program? The counsellor can help the student design a program and provide opportunities which are realistic and yet not limit his ambitions.

with college admissions. This can be a difficult task for students who don’t know how to go about it. Colleges vary in specialties, admission requirements, and size. The counsellor is familiar with many colleges and can be most helpful in suggesting appropriate choices. An area of concern which has received much recent publicity is that of dropouts. Students drop out of school for a variety of reasons. Regardless of the cause, they may suffer for the rest of their lives. Research has shown that dropouts are more likely to be unemployed. They face many financial problems as adults. The guidance counsellor can play an important role in helping these students to remain in school until graduation. All in all, the guidance counsellor has a very important part in a high school program. He is the person who can help each individual student to be a successful graduate and adult. Richard Nixon in search for ambassador NEW YORK (UPI)— Evidence is mounting that President-elect Richard Nixon has run into difficulty in his search for a ambassador to the United Nations. The obstacles are far from insurmountable, and Nixon will probably name his man before the week’s end as has been promised by spokesmen. Although R. Sargeant Shriver, U.S. ambassador to France, was reported to be still in the running, a Nixon source said the former director of the antipoverty program “is not and has not been the only possibility.” A variety of names has entered the now free-wheeling speculations, among them Sen. Henry Jackson, D-Wash., Eugene McCarthy, D-Minn., and even J. Russell Wiggens, the current U.S. ambassador to the U.N. who was appointed to the post in the early fall after George Ball resigned. Nixon and Wiggens met Tuesday for about 15 minutes in the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. Later Wiggens took Nixon’s arm and escorted him across the street to a confer, ence with Secretary.General Thant at U.N. headquarters. Nixon used the occasion to declare his unqualified support of the world organization and to pledge that his administration would “do everything that we can to strengthen this organization as it works in the cause of peace throughout the world. During his appearance at U.N. headquarters, Nixon repeated his recently stated hope that the nuclear nonproliferation treaty would be ratified by the Senate in the early days of his administration. Nixon had said during the campaign that he favored the pact, but that it would be inappropriate for the United States to complete action on it so soon after Soviet troops had occupied Czechoslovakia. He staked out a position opposing the calling of a special session of the Senate to take up the treaty. But, chatting Tuesday at the U.N. with William C. Foster, U.S. disarmament representative, Nixon said; “The time might not have been ripe last fall, may or may not be ripe in the immediate future, but will shortly become ripe.” FBI agent found dead in courtyard WASHINGTON (UPI)—The body of an FBI agent was found in a parking courtyard of the Justice Department Tuesday.Authorities said he apparently committed suicide. The FBI identified the man as Special Agent Thomas Elrod, 35, Woodbridge, Va. He was assigned to the FBI laboratory in the Justice Department building. A revolver was found near Elrod’s body, the FBI said. A spokesman said there also were indications Elrod had been in the Bureau’s eighth floor attic storage area before he was found dead. There were said to be indications Elrod might have shot himself and then plunged out an eighth floor window. General Services Administration (GSA) guards discovered the body in the Courtyard E parking space. The FBI said death apparently occurred between 7 and 7:30 a.m., shortly before most Justice Department employes arrive for work.
