TV in review By RICK DU BROW
By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD (UPI)— Elvis Presley may be in the over. 30 generation now, but he still packs quite a wallop with televiewers. His recent one-hour special on WBC-TV was the top-rated show in the national telvision rank, ings for the week ending Dec. 8. Presley even unseated “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In,” which usually is the No. 1 program. In the latest ratings, however, it came in second. Third was another rerun of CBS-TV’s Christmas cartoon with the characters from the “Peanuts” comic strip. All of the “Peanuts” cartoons for video are astoundingly success, ful year after vear as reruns.
Presley, by the way, was up against another top star, CBSTV’s Doris Day, and trounced her weekly series, which finished 57th. The veteran actress-singer has thus far had difficulty in getting consistently high ratings. It is interesting to note that Presley was also up against CBS.TV’s Red Skelton, who nevertheless managed to rank high up again, placing 19th. This means that the CBS-TV audience fell off sharply when Skelton went off and Miss Day — who follows him—came on. CBS.TV’s National Geographic Society specials, mean, while, continued to pull down powerful ratings. The latest, aboug reptiles and amphibians— excellently done— ranked sev-
All four delegations sat in Paris for first time
By GEORGE SIBERA PARIS (UPI)—For the first time all four full delegations to Vietnam War talks sat in Paris today but disagreed over ground rules for starting the delayed negotiations. U.S. and South Vietnamese leaders were expected to meet and try to close their own policy differences today before presenting new procedural over, tures to North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. Tran Buu Kiem, the leader of the Viet Cong delegation,

enth among all shows, and gave Skelton a strong lead-in. NBC-TV’s “Hallmark Hall of Fame,” meanwhile, continued to maintain its unaccustomed place in the ratins’ high-rent district. Previously it did well statistically with a football drama, “A Punt, a Pass and a
Prayer.” This time, it placed 31st with a musical version of “Pinocchio,” starring Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits in the title role. Television’s movies continued to plummet in popularity as some of the weaker titles dominated the film shots. The highest-rated movie, “Ride Beyond Vengeance,” ranked 35th. Next came a two-hour video original, “Escape to a Mindanao,” which was 36th.
arrived in Paris Monday night and hinted he would try to pressure the United States into dealing directly with the Viet Cong. Kiem, who is the guerrilla “foreign minister,” called on the United States to open immediate peace talks. In a brief arrival statement, Kiem vowed that the “South Vietnamese” people would fight to the end to defeat the United States. But Kiem emphasized much more the Viet Cong’s wish to make peace with the allies. Kiem flew into Paris a few hours after the North Vietnamese delegation revealed its latest offer for the seating arrangements at any expanded Vietnamese conference — a round table at which each delegation would be allowed to sit where it wished. Th€' new quarrel between the American and South Vietnamese governments, arising from a statement Sunday by Defense Secretary Clark M. Cliffoid, appeared likely to hamper the progress of the procedural skirmishing in Paris, diplomatic observers said. South Vietnamese Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky Monday denounced Clifford as “having a gift for saying the wrong things at the wrong time.” • * * Melorrhea is the writing of excessively long pieces of music.
