The earliest carol was the Angels’ Hymn, with the refrain, “Gloria in excelsis Deo.” One of the oldest Christmas hymns is “Adeste Fideles,” or “O Come All Ye Faithful,” the music of which is believed to have been composed by Saint Bonaventure in the 14th century. In the Middle Ages many carols were secular songs and were used for dancing. An example is the old English favorite, “Deck the Halls With Boughs of Holly.” Miss Pierce sang four carols, with the members joining in the last two, “Silent Night,” and “Joy to the World.” Following the program, alienjoyed refreshments of Christmas punch and cookies, served by the hostess. DEAR HELOISE: I would like to tell you about the slipcovers I made last summer for our den furniture from terry cloth beach towels. The furniture has loose cushions for the seat and back. It gets such hard wear that this material is the best that I have found for the purpose. I bought plain cotton cording at my dime store for the piping. Finding this so successful, I then decided to cover the chairs in the children’s room with big, heavy bath towels. Since the boy’s room is done in brown, I bought five dark brown ones. I made slipcovers for all of the cushions with zippers in the back so that they can be unzipped and thrown in the washing machine, tumbled dry and put back on with no effort at all. This saves dad on dry cleaning bills. Rebecca
* * * Oh, Rebecca, that’s a great idea. Now you’ve got your own “Sunny Brook” slipcovers. We think you’re a real brain, Luv. Heloise
* * * DEAR HELOISE: Whenever I boil Polish sausage I always save the water to cook dried beans in. WOW! Does it ever change the taste of plain ol’ beans! If you don’t want to boil the whole link, try slicing small pieces of any kind of link sausage and using ’em. Makes grand seasoning. Lucille Moore
* * * DEAR HELOISE: I have just finished sorting through my’ array of Christmas cards for those I wish to answer, keep, etc. Many of them end up in the wastepaper basket, of course, but I do save a lot for trimming packages next year. You’d be surprised at the stunning ones I can make by using these old cards. If the picture has been glued onto the card proper, I remove it. Sometimes I use
the entire front of the card. But by buying solid colored paper green, red, white I can just stick on these card fronts with cellophane tape (doubled on the back at top and bottom) and my packages look so very professional like the ones .you pay to have done in the stores. I’ve saved buying absolutely tons of ribbon by doing this and wrapping time is cut in half. Merry C. * * * DEAR HELOISE: For those who have seldomused flashlights and find that the batteries go dead and corrode . . . Don’t keep those batteries in the flashlight so it’s ready for use just any’ time. Put the last one in upside down. Keep the bottom of the flashlight just barely screwed on so that they will rattle when you shake the flashlight. Just within a few seconds the lower one can be reversed. Sure has saved my batteries. Grandpa * * * DEAR HELOISE: I always carry a folded plastic sandwich bag in my billfold. Takes up no room (women could carry’ one in their purses i. You see, I wear bridges. Often when I’m a guest and want to remove my bridge after mealtime (remember the tomato seeds?), I excuse myself and remove the bridge, rinse it off, then, leaving a few drops of water on it, place it in the plastic bag. I can twist the top tightly and tuck it in my pocket if I don’t wish to replace it. Youngster * * * Tried It 48 hours. Works. Catch that? Me, too! Heloise Nurses to meet All members of the Putnam County Registered Nurses Organization are asked to meet at Putnam County Hospital at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to sing Christmas Carols throughout the hospital.
