DePauw pins 86-69 defeat on California Western

By MIKKCIIRON Sports Kditor DePauw University, ranked 19th in the nation, roared past touring California Western 8669 last night behind the 32point production of Tom McCormick. In the opening minutes of play, DePauw rushed out to a 10-0 lead before the West Coast visitors tallied their first field goal at the 16:14 mark in the first

half. Tiger fans began to move to the edge of their seats in Bowman Gymnasium in the next 10minutes of play, however, as the visitors knotted the score at 20all on a bucket by 6-footer Larry Weddle with 6:39 showing on the ticker. From there on. Coach Elmer McCall’s cagers traded buclwts with the California team until the end of the half which found the score being tied four more times

Boilermakers win 93 -55 mismatch

By United Press International Last year they were upset, so this time it was a mismatch that bordered the ridiculous. That’s the way it was Tuesday night for Purdue’s ninthranked basketball Boilermakers wno rolled over Outmanned Butler on their home court, 93-55, for their third straight victory. Purdue, beaten only by No. 1 UCLA in their opener, broke a 15-15 tie with six straight markers to begin the runaway. It was 29-17 midway in the first half and 49-27 at intermission. Scoring ace Rick Mount hit 13 fielders and two free tosses for 28 points to lead Purdue.

Bill Keller added 16. For Butler, Clarence Harper and Bob Schroeder each scored 12. Purdue, which hit .487 from the floor, avenged Butler’s upset victory last season, 76-69. ATLANTA—Dr, Bruce Dull of the National Communicable Disease Center, announcing the expected effect of the Christ, mas Jiison on the nation’s outbreak of Hong Kong flu: “There’s no question that all the movement of people during the Christmas holidays who are ill or who likely have the virus will cause a spread of the flu.”

in that period of play. Western never took the lead once in the evening, and tied the score for the last time, 3232, on junior Don Bradenburg’s bucket coming with but 34seconds remaining. The Tigers then took the lead for good on a fielder with the clock still tickingaway and showing 23-seconds left when Dave Browning, 6-foot guard, put DePauw ahead for good, 34-32. The revived Tigers began the second half by canning two free throws, one by Mike O’Connell and the other by teammate Larry Downs, with Western’s Larry Weddle picking up both personals that vaulted DePauw a 36-32 lead. From there on, the Tigers began to build a lead that the touring Californians could not tie or surpass. The closest Coach Bob Kloppenburg’s quintet could come to their Midwestern hosts was a single point, 48-47, however, but three two-pointers in succession by Tom McCormick gave the Tigers a 54-47 advantage and set them on the way to victory No. 2. With DePauw leading 63-53, and then falling to an eightpoint lead, 63-55, Dale Barrett, Downs and McCormick each tossed in fielders to boost the Tigers to a more comfortable 69-55 advantage.

The rest of the game found the Tigers continuing on their winning way, while Western substituted men in and out of their lineups frequently as they had done for most of the game. DePauw’s biggest lead was a 21-point margin, 86-65, but the Western quintet dumped in the last two field goals to make the final score read DePauw 86, California Western, 69. This weekend DePauw will play host to Wabash, Bucknell and Wheaton Colleges in what adds up to a four-team round robin with two games on Friday and two on Saturday. For the game, both teams hit in respectable figures — despite the “cold floor”, with DePauw firing away at a .493 clip from the field, making 34 of 69, and Western attempting 66 and counting 31 for a .470 mark.

From the charity stripe, it was again the Tigers who led the way with a red-hot .818 mark as they clicked on 18 of 22 launches. Western also hit in the upper bracket as they made seven of nine for a .778 percentage. In the preliminary game, DePauw’s freshman lost to St. Josephs 69-58 despite the 13point production of Overman. Jay Frye, Greencastle, tossed in eight points in a losing cause.

WHERE'S THE OTHER TEAM?--This might have been what the DePauw cagers were wondering as Mike O'Connell (45) goes in for an easy twopointer. Following the 6-8 center down the floor are Larry John-
