HOLLYWOOD (UPI)— Peter Noone, of the singing group called Herman’s Hermits, has been trying for some time to become a well-rounded musical stage performer. His latest effort in this direction came Sunday night when he played the title role in NBC-TV’s 90minute adaptation of “Pinocchio” on the “Hallmark Hall of Fame.” I confess I’ve about had my fill of the endless so-called “classics” for children being adapted for television, but Sunday’s version of “Pinocchio” had its moments, and—more important—it had young Mr. Noone, who is very much all right.

I should emphasize, by the way, that I’m not against more good children’s programs on the home screen. It’s just that stories for youngsters are inevitably—well, most of the time—much less sophisticated, and much more obvious, on video than in any other medium I can think of. The latest treatment of “Pinocchio,” for instance, reflected this general approach, but fortunately there were enough imaginative flights of fancy to indicate adult thinking. But as I was saying about Mr. Noone—he, at least, is one pop singer who is not satisfied merely to stay put. He has, of course, another Britisher as a fine example—Tommy Steele, who, after being a hit pop singer, turned to the theater and movies and developed his talents. If memory serves me, Noone aappeared several seasons back in an ill-fated musical version of “The Canterbury Ghost” on the series called “ABC Stage 67.” Sir Michael Redgrave was in it too, I believe, but what I remember most of all was that although the show had its failings, Noone was highly pleasing—ingratiating, in fact— as a featured cast member. He was the same again Sunday night, being the true star of the show although Burl —Robber “We thought he was trying to put distance between our car and other cars to minimize the danger of the explosion,” one of the victims said. “Seconds later the car picked up speed and soon disappeared from out sight.” The four bank employes were left standing in a rain as the bandit sped away. Nobuyoshi Miura, executive director of the bank sending the money to the company, told newsmen he had not kept record of the serial numbers of the stolen bills. “Our bank is small so we usually assign two men to transport money. But in the case of Toshiba, the amount was too big so we assigned two additional employes. We were at fault for not employing guards or using an armored car,” Miura said.
