This deal occurred in the match between Italy and Thailand during the 1966 world championship. When the Italians held the North-South cards, the bidding went as shown and declarer had no trouble making four spades doubled for a score of 590 points. But when Thailand was North - South at the second table, the bidding went:

West's four notrump bid suggested support for both minor suits but uncertainty about which one to bid. East bid five diamonds and, after North doubled, that became the final contract. Strangely enough, the Italian declarer played the hand correctly but went down as a result. South led a spade won by declarer with the ace. Had East now led the ace and another diamond, he would have made the contract by continuing with the queen of hearts, Intending to finesse. His losses would have been two club tricks, period. But East reasoned that on the bidding the trumps were far more likely to be divided 3-1 than 2-2, and he therefore led the A-K and another diamond to make sure that all the adverse trumps were out of the way before he attempted the heart finesse. He did not want to subject himself to a possible heart ruff if it turned out that the trumps were divided 3-1 and the hearts 4-1. There is no question that East’s decision to cash the A-K of diamonds first was technically correct, but unfortunately it failed when the hearts unexpectedly proved to be divided 5-0. Declarer lost two clubs and a heart for down one. The inferior play of the ace of diamonds followed by the four would have made the contract easily.

Sirhan trial set for Jan. 7

LOS ANGELES (UPI)-Sir-han B. Sirhan, charged with the murder of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, will spend the Christmas and New Year’s holidays in a jail cell, not in a courtroom fighting for his life. Superior Court Judge Herbert V. Walker Thursday overruled a prosecution objection and postponed the start of Slrhan's trial for the third time at the request

of the defense.

The trial is now set to begin Jan. 7 In a steel-plated

courtroom with closed circuit television carrying the proceedIngs to an overflow crowd of newsmen four floors below. Walker also announced that because he Intends to have the jury locked up during the trial, estimated to last about two months, he may allow jurors’ wives and husbands to visit them during weekends. The reason for the latest postponement was to allow Grant B. Cooper, Slrhan’s chief defender, sufficient time to prepare his case. Although Cooper was hired by Sirhan shortly after the 24-year-old Jordanian was arrested June 5 for fatally wounding Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel, the lawyer’s role in the case was kept secret because he was involved in another trial.

You can’t see what’s inside—even when the package is opened. Or eat it, wear it, hear it or smell it. But you can see the results of what it does. The warm glow that casts off darkness; the family grouped around the television set; the small sparkling eyes as you slip the big, beautiful cake from the oven. And you can feel the results ... in the soft, smooth touch of your electrically dried clothes... in the comfort of your electrically heated home. In the way you feel . . . relaxed, with more time to take care of your family, with electricity making life more comfortable and convenient all through your house. You use more electricity than ever before—5V2 times as much as people used 35 years ago. But it costs you less per kilowatt hour. It’s the one thing that has continued to go down in price while almost everything else has gone steadily up. It’s one bargain everybody has a lot of use for. Don’t you agree?
