Clovers run past Clay City, 88 -59
No race this season for No. 1 rating By FRED McMANE UPI Sports Writer The battle for college basketjail’s top ranking should be /ery interesting—next season. That’s the earliest any of the rther teams in the country can lope to compete with UCLA on in even basis. The Bruins, led by awesome .ew Alcindor, simply have too nuch firepower for any of the earns they will meet this reason. They proved it Saturday light when they thrashed a ood Notre Dame club 88-75 in a ame that was expected to rival ast year’s thrilling UCLAlouston clash in the Astrodome. The Irish played in the ■eginning of the game as if they night upset UCLA. The conlected on 56 per cent of their ;hots in the first half yet nbelievably trailed at halftime 9-44 as the Bruins hit on 61 per ent of their shots. NO CONTEST It was no contest in the econd half as the Bruins slowly ulled away. Alcindor, who cored 20 points in the first alf, finished with 29 points and layed a devastating defensive ame with nine blocked shots, ut it was the Bruins’ overall epth that wore down the Irish. The Bruins will not play again ntil Dec. 20, but their toughest ames are already behind them, 'hey have kayoed Purdue and )hio State in addition to the .otre Dame, and except for a ossible meeting with secondanked North Carolina in the loliday Festival at New York ity later this month, only outhern California and Houston /ill afford them any competiion at all the rest of the eason.
CLAY CITY — The Cloverdale Clovers had three men in double figures here Saturday as they rode to victory over the Eels of Clay City, 88-59. High scorer for the Clovers was Bill Steele with 31 points. He was followed by teammates Larry McKammy and Garry Staley who scored 15 and 14 points respectively.
With the support of these players, the Clovers got off to an early lead and maintained it throughout the game. Cloverdale is idle on the hardwood until Saturday night when they clash with undefeated Bainbridge in Greencastle’s 5,000 seat plus gymnasium. CLOVERDALE (88) FG FT PF Coon 0 0 4

Papa Bear given game ball
By VITO STELLINO UPI Sports Writer Papa Bear was given a game ball by the Chicago Bears Sunday—and the Baltimore Colts probably want to give him
one,too.
George Halas—who’s still the Bear owner although he finally stepped down as Bear coach at the end of last season—wasn’t on the scene because he’s in Manchester, England, recuper. ating from hip surgery. But the old man was sure to smile when he learned the Bears “won one for George’’ by stunning the Los Angeles Rams 17-16. “Gosh, those photo finishes. We were at our peak emotionally,’’ exclaimed Halas’ successor, Jim Dooley, “that’s what this game is—emotion.’’ One other title was decided Sunday when the Cleveland Browns won the Century crown by turning back the Washington Redskins 24-21. It eliminated St. Louis even though the Cards topped New York 28-21. Here’s how the post-season playoffs look now that next week’s St. Louis-Cleveland and Baltimore.Los Angeles games are now meaningless; Dec. 21 in Cleveland— Cleveland vs. Dallas.

Dec. 22 in Baltimore— Baltimore vs. Chicago or Minnesota. Baltimore beat Green Bay 163 Saturday to knock the Packers out and then watched on TV as the Bears made them champions. The Philadelphia Eagles won while losing Sunday as they beat New Orleans 29-17 but may have lost O. J. Simpson. Buffalo at 1-12-1 now has the worst record in pro football and is almost sure to grab Simpson. Remains Tied Minnesota remained tied with Chicago for the Central Division lead at 7-6 by stopping San Francisco 30-20. Chicago plays Green Bay and Minnesota meets Philadelphia in the finales next week. If both win, Chicago advances to the Baltimore meeting. In the other games, Dallas whipped Pittsburgh 28-7 and Detroit topped Atlanta 24-7. The Ram-Bear struggle was a dramatic defensive duel with the Rams battling back from a 17-9 deficit in the fourth period even though their quarterback Roman Gabriel was below par after being shaken up in the second period.
A blocked punt set up a Gabriel TD that narrowed the deficit to 17-16 and the Rams had a last shot when they had a first down on the Bear 32 with 30 seconds left. But a holding penalty called against tackle Charley Cowan moved the Rams to midfield, out of field

Bad guys win one By United Press International The bad guys finally won one in movieland. Although four of their five first-stringers had been evicted from the game at Los Angeles because of personal fouls, the Dallas Chaparrals held on for a 114-110 American Basketball Association victory over the Stars Sunday night. Player - coach Cliff Hagan proved the big man for the Texas outfit, coming through for five points in the final 40 seconds. John Beasley, however, led Dallas scorers with 27 points. Merv Jackson was high for the Stars with 23 points. In the only other game played Sunday night, Larry Jones had 29 points and Lonny Wright 25 as the Denver Rockets whipped the Miami Floridians 121-113.

Kansas City came up with a seven that could lead to a $25,000 bank roll. The Chiefs defense intercepted San Diego quarterback John Hadl six times and had a total of seven thefts in a 40-3 rout of the Chargers. Kansas City needed the victory at San Diego to remain tied with Oakland in the Western Division. Both have 112 records. The Raiders beat Denver 33-27 to keep pace. If they win their finales, a playoff will be held to determine the New York Jets opponent in the Dec. 29 American Football League title game. The champion then moves into the Super Bowl against the National Football League titlist and the rich payoff awaiting the winners. Kansas City is at Denver next Saturday and Oakland plays at San Diego Sunday. Len Dawson refused to be upstaged by the defense as the Kansas City quarterback threw three touchdown passes to negate an early 3-0 San Diego Lead. He completed a fiveyarder to Golster Richardson, one of seven yards to Mike Garrett and a 68-yard bomb to Frank Pitts. The first two TD’s were set up by interceptions. Hadl, entering the game with a league-high 26 TD passes, was shut out. He completed nine of 25 passes for 110 yards and was solidly jeered by partisan fans in the third quarter. New York host in the AFL title game, beat Cincinnati 27-14 and Miami mauled Boston 38-7 in other league action.

goal range. Gabriel then failed to complete a pass and the Bears took over with three seconds to go. The Rams thought they might have lost a down— and a shot at one more desperation passafter the penalty.
Paul Robinson joined Cookie Gilchrist as the only rookies to ever gain 1,000 yards rushing in a single season, but Cincinnati couldn’t contain the Jets passing attack. Joe Namath, who went through a six-game drought without throwing a touchdown pass, raised his TD total to 15 when he hit George Sauer on a 10-yarder and Don Maynard for 12 yards. Babe Parilli, Namath’s standin quarterback, passed 34 yards to Bake Turner for New York’s final score. Jim Turner kicked field goals of 35 and 22 yards and raised his league-leading scoring total to 138 points. Miami’s defense set up three Dolphin touchdowns and produced a fourth when linebacker Frank Emanuel pounced on a blocked punt in the end zone. Quarterback Bob Griese found his favorite targets with scoring strikes, three yards to Karl Noonan and seven to Doug Moreau. Boston averted a shutout on Jim Nance's 30-yard gallop through the middle in the second quarter.
ORDERS CLEAN SHAVE NEW YORK (UPI)— Milt woodward, president of the American Football League, ordered the New York Jets Sunday to cut their beards, mustaches and long sideburns.
Most of the Jets have complied but quarterback Joe Namath said he is not ready yet to shave his Fu Manchu mustache.
Royals feeling pressure Even for an early season ga'Vne, the Cincinnati Royals felt that playoff pressure when they met the New York Knickerbockers. And they handled it with ease by rallying from a 77-64 deficit to beat the Knicks 120-115 Sunday night in a National Basketball Association game played at Cleveland. The Knicks, although fifth in the Eastern Division, went into the contest with seven victories in their previous eight games and had a chance to close within two games of the fourthplace Royals in the jockeying for the final playoff berth. But Jerry Lucas scored 32 points and Connie Dierking added 21 as Cincinnati pulled back for the victory. Dick Barnett had 27 points and Howie Komives 26 for New York. In other NBA games, the Los Angeles Lakers whipped the San Diego Rockets 132-118, the Philadelphia 76ers overcame the Milwaukee Bucks 122-117 and the Atlanta Hawks routed the Phoenix Suns 121-99. The Big Three of Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor scored 35, 28 and 24 points respectively as Los Angeles stretched its Western Division lead to SVa games over runnerup San Diego. The Lakers now have beaten the Rockets in 11 of 12 meetings since San Diego joined the league last year. Philadelphia, third in the East, closed to within a game of front-running Boston despite a surprising challenge from Mil. waukee in a game played at Syracuse, N.Y.
