in 1958 as one of two survivors of the Indiana INS to become part of the merged United Press International. Jep had a sense of joyous living, in the tradition of Paris or Vienna. Some of his favorite songs were from “The Student Prince” and other Strauss

operas and he had a good baritone voice. Staff meetings for the old INS generally were held around a table in the adjacent Press Club. He was pleased with the many honors he received but humble about them. His scoops were sg many he could not remember them. Not all were limited to Indiana. He covered most of the national political conventions for

four decades and was credited with being the first newsman to learn of Earl Warren’s 1948 selection for the Republican vice presidential nomination. Asked His Evaluation Few Indiana politicos decided lo seek state office without asking Jep for his evaluation of their chances. He spoke the truth with candor and humor and when he rarely made a

miscalculation, he personally apologized to the affected persons. Governor Branigin, one of Jep’s friends, called him “one of the first of the college trained journalists around here. He knew how to write. He could tell a story and he had wit.” Branigin singled out Jep’s description of him as “a reluctant dragon” and conceded it had

taken him a few years to decide to run for governor. One incident in the legend concerns Jep’s entry into the Senate while a debate was underway. Other newsmen came and went without notice but when Jep’s big figure crossed the open space in front of the podium, the two senators stopped debating. Jep greeted them with “Hello, characters” in a

booming voice as he walked on to the press table. During the 1943 Legislature, the late Indianapolis WFBM newscaster Gilbert Forbes, Ruth and I returned with Jep to a night session he was to cover following a happy supper hour. During what seemed then to this novice legislative reporter to be an important debate, Jep went to sleep.

Worriedly, I began to take notes, expecting that the task of coverage might devolve upon me. Forbes observed the overanxious note-taking and said; “Don’t worry, Girl Friday. You’ll never be as good a newsman sober as Jep is drunk.” And that’s the way it always was. Without trying very hard, ae was a better writer and reoorter than the rest of us.
