Coatesville news
The following story came Monday of an incident that happened to three Coatesville ladies who went out for a pleasant Sunday dinner. Mrs. Callie Casady, her sister, Miss Stella Shields and their neighbor and Mrs. Edna. Smith drove to the Fairway Restaurant for the noon time lunch together. As they were emerging from their car Mrs. Smith fell unconscious. Some help soon came to the scene and Mrs. Smith was rushed to the Putnam County hospital and put under oxygen. She regained consciousness after an hour or so, however, the noon hour was a trying one for all concerned. We few DePauw folks are glad to know the old Monon Bell is once again on the Greencastle campus. Have you read a good book or short story for this month of November? With snowy, bad weather it can be cozier inside with some good reading matter. Our local library has a classic story entitled “In The Green Mountain Country” by Clarence Day. Everyone who calls him’ self an American should read this short but powerful story. George Burnett, a plumber at the Wayne Kivett place is a worker who believes in having two jobs. After pipe fitting and furnace adjustments during the day, he takes off for the woods and creeks after working hours to pursue the raccoon. Since the law came in for catching fur, George has brought home 44 fat raccoons. One morning last week this writer counted five that George had placed in the back of his truck. Wednesday a report came that Mrs. Avis Walls had died at Danville. She is a cousin to Mrs. Oral McCammack of Coatesville. Avis was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tilghman Ruark of Stilesville. She early prepared herself to teach and had her first teaching assigment in the Fillmore School. At a latter date she became a teacher in the Danville School and spent her teaching year there. She was married to Charles Walls who proceeded her death by several years. Services for her were at the Baker Funeral Home in Danville. It is quite true that over the years there has never been a time when the college and university, administrators and students have been held in such low esteem as now. People all over the country have little good to say for the student. They think less of the trustees and presidents of our institutions. In fact, a majority are disguised. It is hard to understand how a university student can write a column of dirt and put it in circulation among decent people. How can one put out the language of shabby pool halls and gutters and a university president pass it up as if it were classical literature? A college president who cracks down o n filthy literature and fires gutter snipes that use it should be awarded a ;golden crown. A couple of mushrooms were found growing this week in a south Coatesville yard where leaves were being raked. The two could not be eaten, but were of the stink horn variety, ones with long stems. One usually thinks of mushrooms growing in the spring and many kinds do but now and then for some reason one of the many varieties pops up clearly out of season. The two mentioned above came up through the light snow and were undersized. Thanksgiving brings happy memories of other days; of days
LIGHT DETECTOR An RCA technician examines a newlight detector that seeks out flashes of light too weak or brief to be seen by the human eye. The device utilizes an amplifying section of gallium phosphide 10 times more efficient than those now in use. The tube can detect light from “pulsars.” the mysterious radio stars, and can be used to see more deeply into atoms.
by Joe Davidson when dad and mother were here and dinner in abundance was on the farm table, including baked hen, dressing, sausage, hot bis-
cuits, corn pone and all good things that go with Thanksgiving dinners. Grandpa and grandma had walked half a mile down
the old dirt Greencastle-Danvil-le Road from their own farm home. Grandma carried pies in a slat basket and granddad carried a cake. We youngsters felt that such happy gatherings would go on and on forever and parents and grandparents would some how
always be with us. The Thanksgiving evening ended by all gathering about the stretched out table and eating steaming oyster soup. Then grandpa and grandma left for home. It seems but a few years that they departed for their long home never to return and then followed sister
and father and mother. The Quaker poet had told the story in this line: “Ah brother! You and I are left of all that circle now.” Yes, Thanksgiving is good. Our memories make us glad and thankful for a day that was and for the present one that we en-
joy with those we love. Cascade journeyed to Pittsboro and finally took the Burros by a close score 83-79. This is hard to figure when the Cadets were leading by 30 points at the half. A date for United Methodist members to work for special attention is: The first Indiana-
polis West District Conference will l)e December 19 at the Speedway United Methodist Church. The open house held Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Walter and Mrs. Barthalomew was well attended by members from both the Amo and Coatesville churches. The event was in the parsonage.
