Cubs end Clovers’ 5-game streak, 76-64
coach Dave McCracken unveiled his ‘68-69 edition of the Tiger Cubs in Greencastle’s brand new 5,000-plus accomadating gymnasium before a capacity crowd which saw the hosts knocking Cloverdale from the ranks of the unbeaten, 76-64. Cloverdale entered the hardwood clash with a spotless 5-0 mark, while the Tiger Cubs entered the tilt after winning over a tough Crawfordsville quintet in their first game on Wednesday night. The 5,000-plus crowd got their money’s worth, as the contest produced all the excitement it had been expected to. The first two-pointer in the just completed structure was provided by Greencastle’s Doug Smith at the 7:28 mark, and putting the hometown cagers ahead
2-0. That was to all the scoring by the Tiger Cubs for over the next two and a half minutes, as Cloverdale’s fired up Clovers heeded the call of their multitude of fans for a basket and proceeded to reel off seven straight points to take a 7-2 lead with 5:08 remaining in the opening stanza. Greencastle, using a full-court press a good part of the game, came to life when Darryl Pierce dropped in a two-pointer at the 4:42 mark. When Cloverdale had worked the ball down to their half of the court after fighting their way through GHS’s harrassing press only to have it stolen, Pierce drove in for another bucket as the Tiger Cubs displayed their run, shoot, wham, bang,
score running offense, making the score 7-6, and tying the score at 7-all when Cloverdale’s Jim Staley was whistled by the referee; as he fouled Pierce. The free throw was good and tied the 1 score, 7-7. McCracken’s gang pulled off another play of “Swipe the Ball” when Dave Hurst thieved the ball from Cloverdale and drove downcourt on a sensational driving layup to put his team in front, 9-7. After the two clubs traded free throws, Greencastle took a fourpoint lead, 12-8 before the visitors tied the score at 10 to 10 and went ahead on a fielder by Billy Steele, 12-10, and was followed by fellow teammate Charles Coon who also added a two-pointer after CHS sank a launch from the field to put the
Ole’ Green Bay Packers just aren’t the same
The Green Bay Packers moved to the brink of oblivion Sunday and the Baltimore Colts are ready and waiting to shove them over the edge. The Packers, whose reign as three-time defending National Football League champions may now be over, took a 20-7 lead into the final period but then fell apart as San Francisco exploded for 20 points and a 2720 triumph. Things like that just didn’t used to happen to the Packers. Now Green Bay must beat Baltimore this Saturday in a nationally televised game or face virtual elimination from contention in the Central Division. If the Packers lose, Minnesota can beat them out by winning one of its final two games— and one of those games is against hapless Philadelphia. And the Colts are poised to beat the Packers. They boosted their record to 11-1 by routing Atlanta 44-0 Sunday and are determined to match the 13-1 mark posted by Green Bay back in 1962. In the Eastern Conference, it looks like a Dallas-Cleveland clash on Dec. 21 for the crown. Cleveland whipped New York 45-10 to clinch the Capitol Division crown for idle Dallas. Cleveland can clinch the Century Division title by beating Washington this Sunday. Bears Beat Saints In the other two games, Chicago edged New Orleans 2317 and St. Louis topped Pittsburgh 20-10 as both clubs

kept their slim title hopes alive. Chicago is actually tied with Minnesota for the Central Division lead and if the Bears finish that way, they’ll take the title since they beat Minnesota twice during the regular season. But the Bears have a rugged schedule with Los Angeles and Green Bay in their final two games. The ailing Packers seemed in good shape going into the fourth period against San Francisco with a 13-point lead. But a pass interception and a short punt set up touchdown passes of 19 and 41 yards from John Brodie to Bill Tucker. That put the
Forty-Niners ahead 21-20 and Tommy Davis kicked two field goals to clinch it. Tom matte scored two touchdowns and John Mackeg made a spectacular 41-yard TD run with a swing pass as the Colts routed Atlanta. Earl Morrall had two touchdown passes, one of them on the play to Mackey, before being lifted in the final period for a “sub” named Johnny Unitas. Unitas, who received a huge roar from the crowd, played the whole fourth period as Baltimore added 10 more points. He said he feels “well enough to play.”

San Diego holds the key to the Western Division title and could put a lock on the championship with a spectacular finish. The Chargers trail co-leaders Kansas City and Oakland by game. They meet those teams the next two weekends, and a sweep creates the possibility of a three-way tie at the end of the regular season. The John Hadl to Lance Alworth passing combo kept the rhythm alive for San Diego title drumbeaters as they accounted for four touchdowns in the Chargers 47-23 victory over the Denver Broncos Sunday. Denver is not in a charitable mood when it comes to doing favors for San Diego, but, if the Broncos accomplish the seemingly impossible by knocking off Oakland and Kansas City while Sid Gillman’s crew wins two straight, then the Chargers have a Dec. 29 date with the Jets in New York for the American Football League title. Jets Rump New York clinched the Eastern title on Thanksgiving Day when Houston lost to Kansas City. The Jets, not wanting to feel they backed into the championship, routed Miami 37-17 Sunday to make the crown more than official. Boston humbled Cincinnati 33-14 in the only other AFL action. Against the Broncos, whom they trimmed 55-24 in an earlier game this year, the Chargers scored the first five times they had the ball Sunday.
The Hadl to Alworth touchdown circus consisted of passes covering 1, 2, 4 and 79 yards. Hadl threw a fifth scoring pass to Gary Garrison from nine yards out. Russ Smith ran 35 yards for another San Diego tally, Dennis Partee kicked a 19-yard field goal and the other two Charger points were posted when Denver quarterback Marlin Briscoe was tackled in the end zone for a safety. Maynard Sets Mark Don Maynard set an all-pro career record for yards gained on pass receptions as he led a Jets fourth-quarter rally that overcame Miami’s 17-14 lead. Maynard caught seven passes for 160 yards, raising his total to 9,332 yards as he bypassed the old record held by Raymond Berry of the Baltimore Colts. Maynard hauled in three touchdown passes, two from Babe Pari Hi and another from Joe Namath. Parilli, who played the second half after arrangements were made to limit Namath’s activity to the first 30 minutes, passed for three touchdowns, his first aerial scores of the season. Namath connected twice, raising his total to 13. Cincinnati stumbled in its bid for a fourth victory, which would have set a first year record for an expansion team. The Bengals couldn’t cope with the three TD passes by Boston’s Tom Sherman, including throws of 11 and 21 yards to tight end Jim Whalen.
Clovers on top 14 to 12 as the first quarter ended. CHS’s Jim Staley opened the second quarter by dropping in a two-pointer and free throw when he was fouled to give Coach A1 Tucker’s cagers a five-point advantage, 17-12. The Tiger Cubs kept hacking away at Cloverdale’s lead until Gerald Swearingen tied the score at 20 to 20 on a field goal. McCracken’s guys traded points with CHS until the playmaking Pierce again knotted the score with only six seconds left to make the halftime score 26all. In the third period of play, between the whistle tooting of both referees, GHS put their fullcourt press to good use as well as their fast break and took the lead on the scoreboard when Pierce came through with the goahead bucket, 32-30, Another steal, another twopointer by Hurst, another steal. Pierce again inking his way into the tally books was the way the third quarter read as did the fourth. Although guilty of turnovers at time, the Tiger Cubs displayed a not-yet-polished potent defense and devastating offense that could spell plenty of trouble for future opponents. By the end of the third quarter, the hosts had pulled ahead 4737, mainly on their ability to swipe the ball, get it downcourt fast and score. Each team played on about the same scoring terms in the last quarter, with Greencastle chalking up 21 more points, and Cloverdale 19. Pierce, playing the forward position, took game scoring honors as he netted 23-points. Next came the Clovers’ talented Billy Steele with 20. Adding another game honor to his list, Pierce finished as the top rebounder with 17, followed by teammate Doug Smith with 13. Keith Monnett headed Cloverdale’s rebounding, coming off the boards with a total of seven. Greencastle hit surprisingly well from the field since its ‘68-69 Hoosier prep season is still in the infancy stages, firing away at a .411 clip and making 26 of 42 charity tosses for a .590 game average. Cloverdale, obviously rattled by the tight defense Greencastle employed, attempted 64 shots from the field and made good on 20 of them for an even .300 percentage mark, and made 22 of 37 attempts from the free throw line for a so-so.540mark. Greencastle is now 2-0 for the year and will face Howe of Indianapolis this Friday at home and then entertain Rockville, also in the new gymnasium, on Saturday. For A1 Tucker’s fiery and dangerous squad, now 5-1 on the season, they will travel to Clay City on Saturday in an effort to get back on the winning track. In the reserve game, Greencastle won that one also, 51-34. FIRST DOWN, GREENCASTLE-Greencastle High School opened the home portion of their '68-69 cage season Saturday night, but at times there were more piayers lying on the floor than standing. The referees were also quick with the whistle
during the contest, partially due to Phi! Eskew's presence. The Tiger Cubs won, 76-64 for their second straight. Shown taking the fall is GHS's Bill Lear, while Doug Smith (53) stands ready to give a helping hand. BANNER Photo.

DePauw drops opener, 89-63 to nationally ranked
Villanova skipped out of a tight first half basketball game Saturday night in Philadelphia and spanked DePauw’s outmuscled Tigers, 89 - 63, before 5,806 in the Palestra. Tomorrow night at 7:30 the Tigers will attempt to bounce back when they entertain Wabash College in Bowman Gymnasium. The varsity contest will be pre-
ceded by a frosh game between the two schools at 5:30. Playing some of its smoothest opening game ball in several years, DePauw battled the eleventh rated Wildcats nearly even for 18 minutes in the opener for both clubs. The Tigers jumped to a 13-8 margin with 13:47 to go in the first half and trailed only 32-27
with 2:40 left to play in the half. That’s when trouble struck. Six-eight hooker Mike O’Connell picked up his third foul and went to the bench for ,6-4, sophomore, Larry Johnson. The Cape Girardeau, Mo., sparkplug did more than anyone could ask (five baskets in eight shots for the game), but the height loss was more than the short-manned Tigers could handle. With All-American John Jones hitting 30 footers from out front and 6-8, 220 pound sophomore sensation Howard Porter mopping off the backboards, Villanova outscored the Tigers 8-2 in the final 2:40 of the half to lead at intermission 40-29. DePauw kept the deficit at 11 (43-32) with 17:14 to go. Then the Wildcats blew open the game with four consecutive baskets — three by Porter -- for a 5132 advantage. The Tigers cut the margin back to 66-51 with 7:26 to play as Johnson and Jones got into a scoring match, splitting six baskets in a three minute stretch.
Villanova jumped the lead to 7961 with 2:35 left, and added eight more points in a flurry in the last 59 seconds. Villanova did most of its damage on the boards where it claimed a 53-29 advantage. Furthermore, the 13 men Villanova threw into the battle got bigger as they came off the bench with the likes of 6-8 John Schroeder and 6-7 Jim McIntosh outmuscling the tiring Tiger front line. “It was just a matter of too much Villanova talent and manpower,” DePauw coach Elmer McCall said after the game. “I thought we played good basketball, obviously or we wouldn’t have been that close at halftime.” “We thought Larry Downs did a good job coming off the bench to take Jim Jackson’s place. He got nine points and seven rebounds. He made a few mistakes, but he showed us some good moves too.” “And Johnson, we were well satisfied with his work. He gained Continued on Page 6
OSU taking notes on Irish-USC game
Ara Parseghian still hasn’t figured out how to win the close games but he’s come up with a formula to beat Southern California—and Woody Hayes is bound to take notice of it. Of course, Parseghian’s Notre Dame team didn’t actually beat USC despite a 21-7 halftime lead. Parseghian’s teams usually don’t win the close games and they're not noted for doing well in the second half and the result was a 21-21 deadlock—
which is bound to cost USC its No. 1 rating. But the game proved how vulnerable USC is despite the brilliance of O.J, Simpson and the Trojans are going to be in trouble in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State’s tough defensive gang. The Irish ignored the rest of the USC offense and concentrated on Simpson on every play, holding him to 55 yards in 21 carries.
