ATTEST: ESTON C. COOPER AUDITOR

Drop million pounds of bombs By JACKWALSH SAIGON (UPI)—In their heaviest raids around Saigon in a month, U.S. B52s dropped at least a million pounds of bombs Thursday and today onto Communist infiltration corridors tevard the capital, most of them from Cambodia. A semiofficial Cambodian news magazine meantime confirmed what allied commanders have been saying for months— Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers are bivouaced in Cambodia, free from American bombs and troops. The disclosure in the Nov. 22 issues of Bealites Cambodiennes said six North Vietnamese soldiers had been captured in Cambodia and were turned over to the Viet Cong emissary in Phnom Penh, the capital. Ten formations of three to 12 B52s pounded Communist nests around Saigon where allied soldiers listed 511 guerrillas slain since Monday, U.S. headquarters said. Five of the raids centered in Bien Hoa and Long Binh provinces, north of the capital, home of a major U.S. Air Force base and headquarters for the U.S. Army in Vietnam. The other strikes ranged along the Cambodian frontier northwest of Saigon and in the Mekong Delta to the Southeast. U.S. military intelligence pinpointed at least 30,000 Communist soldiers gathered on the Camboaidn border last month and sent the U.S. 1st Air Cavalry Division to help break up apparent guerrilla designs on a thrust toward Saigon. Testing the allied defense screen Wednesday and Thursday, the Reds clashed seven times with allied troops. Military spokesmen reported at least 317 Communists slain against 16 Americans dead, 37 wounded and light South Vietnamese casualties. The 10 B52 strikes followed up the battles, hitting guerrilla troops, supplies and hideouts 28 to 55 miles from the capital and rattling windows in the city.

CONTRACT BRIDGE By B. Jay Becker (Top Rocord-Holdor in Mostors' Individual Championship Play)

South dealer. Both sides vulnerabh*. This deal occurred in a team of four match. At the first table the bidding went as shown and West led the king of spades. East played the deuce and West made the mistake of continuing with the ace before leading a diamond at trick three Declarer ruffed, trumped a .-.pade in dummy on which the queen fell. and. after ruffing another diamond, cashed the A-K of trumps. Since the club finesse was on. South made the contract for a plus of 790 points. At the second table the contract was also four hearts dou-

bled. but West, after leading the king of spades, shifted to a diamond. This variation in the play made an enormous difference in the result. South ruffed the diamond and took a club finesse, which succeeded. But when he led a spade from dummy. East went up with the queen and led a trump Declarer finessed the jack, losing to the queen West then cashed the ace of spades and continued with the fourth round of the suit, which East ruffed to defeat the contract two tricks 500 points. South could have saved a trick by refusing the trump finesse, but he still would have gone down one. Of course, cashing the ace of spades at trick two at the first table was a serious defensive error though it does seem that West was unduly punished for the mistake. West should have recognized how important it was to stop a spade ruff in dummy, and that cashing the spade ace was highly likely to aid declarer. He should have credited East with either the queen of spades or a diamond trick, and defended on that basis. A diamond shift was practically sure to cover both possibilities. The spade continuation was too dangerous, since it might either set up declarer’s (possible) queen or allow him to ruff a spade in dummy.
