Roachdale 84-78 upset winner

ROACHDALE- Roachdale High School played the act of the spoiler Tuesday night in the second game of its own fourteam tournament by slamming favored New Ross 84 to 78 in the final minutes of play. In the opener, Waveland rolled past Russellville 68 to 49 as three of their starters scored in double figures. For Russellville, Richard Lyons turned in a 20point performance, while teammate Steve Goff netted 14. The second game of the evening appeared to be a rerun of the first, as the New Ross worked up an eight-point lead and maintained it most of the first and second quarter. With but four-seconds remaining until the half, Roachdale’s Steve McGaughey sank a fielder from the side to close the gap to three-points, 39 to 36. In the third quarter, a revived Roachdale quintet took the floor after some hearing some game strategy from Coach Jim Sharp and proceeded to match their opponents basket for basket. When the dust had cleared, the visitors from the north still led by three-points, 62 to 59. In the fourth and decisive quarter, the Hawks still had to play catch-up ball, but tied the score at 70 all on a bucket by sparkplug Joe Hutchins. The lead then switched back and forth until Jim Sharp’s gang fell four-points behind, 78 to 74.

From here on it was all Roachdale. The Hawks played rings around every single player of their foes, as they reeled off 10 straight points to put the final score at 84 to 78. During this 10-point outburst, it was the playmaking of each individual team member of the Hawks that won the game with their never-say-die attitude. For the game, Hutchins took game-scoring honors with a grand total of 31-points, followed by teammate Don Watson with 26. The game wasn’t a gift to the Hawks on free throws, as each team made 16 free throws. The deciding factor was the ability of the Hawks to score on clutch plays from the field, which found them make 34 field goals to the other team’s 31. Tonight at 7 p.m. Russellville takes on the 84 to 78 loser, and at 8 p.m., Roachdale will be gunning for their second win in as many nights plus the title of their own tournament. FIRST GAME

Library news

The Greencastle-Putnam County Public Library has received the book, “The Private World of Leonard Bernstein,” by John Gruen. The book was presented to the library by the Women’s Study Club, in memory of Mrs. Mary Trusler. The author, John Gruen, did a lot of research for this book, including a summer spent in Italy vacationing with the Bernsteins, and later studying the amazingly crowded routines of their life in New York and Connecticut. During the seven weeks spent in Italy, the author had lots of

time to talk with Bernstein. He describes some of the conductor’s experiences with orchestras, conductors and other famous people. He discusses the informal life which the family led in the Italian villa retreata pretty place where they could swim, paint, read, play the piano or read musical scores. From this experience the author is able to give a fascinating picture of Leonard Bernstein and his remarkable family. There are 150 photographs which add much to the enjoyment of the book.
