Greencastle Tiger Cubs open ’68-69 season tonight at Crawfordsville

By MIKK CIIKON Sports Kditor

Coach Dave McCracken unveils his 1968-69 edition of the Greencastle Tiger Cubs tonight in a road game at Crawfordsville, which the crafty wizard of the hardwood figures to be a “tough one.” The Greencastle quintet will have a completely new look this year, as far as personnel is concerned, because the June cap and gown ceremonies took a heavy toll. In all, 11 seniors received the diploma that played on last year’s team which made it to the semifinals of the state tournament. Gone are the leading scorers from last year, DeWayne Norris, and Terry Ross, in addition to Jay Frye, Don Irwin, John New, David Dunn, Kevin See, Dee Mon-

nett, Robert New, Doug Kaiser and Ron Cook. Watching this group at graduation ceremonies obviously wasn’t the highlight of the year for McCracken, but on the other hand his hopes for this year’s team are optimistic, although candid. When the Tiger Cubs began practice barely two weeks ago, the veteran coach had only one letterman, junior guard Bill Lear, who stands six-feet even. But McCracken was also mindful of another fact, the sparkling 19-1 record posted by the reserves last year. To go with his lone returnee, this basket-ball-minded group was tapped for its talented services in an effort to come up with a winning team again this year. In practices this week, it’s apparent that opponents are in

for more of the same type of game this year as they were last. That brand of ball is none other than a harrassing full-court-press and a run and shoot ball game. Whether it will work as effective this year as last is something that only time will tell. Speaking of his cagers during a “breather period”, the husky coach said, “They show some good hustle and have some speed to go with it. These boys also want to play ball and it’s showing up.” “If a boy gives everything he’s got,” the DePauw grad continued, “that will satisfy me. Regardless of what his ability may be, if he comes out here on the floor and tries the best he knows how, then that’s our boys.” The Tiger Cubs will also have a new home this year, in addition

to having new personnel. Greencastle’s new 5,000 seat ultra-modern gymnasium is waiting for McCracken’s guys to play their first home contest. And moving day for the Tiger Cubs is this Saturday night when they meet unbeaten Cloverdale (to date) in a contest that should fill every one of the 5,000 seats with fans of both county teams. As for a starting five for tonight’s clash, McCracken has not yet decided and it will probably be game-time before the decision is made.

marks on opponents who take them lightly. McCracken was “greeted” by some bruised and banged up cage prospects when the football season ended. But, as the coach put it, “There's no football injury

The starting five boys who do take the court this game and every game from now on, will all have one thing in common; desire and attitude. It will take a few games for the right combination to click, but when that combination is found, there may be a few claw

Bainbridge beats Turkey Run for 5th straight

MARSHALL -Bainbridge’s undefeated Pointers received a scare last night from winless Turkey Run, but finally broke loose in the third and fourth quarters to register the fifth win in as many starts, 82 to 64. Turkey Run led at the end of the first quarter, 20to 18., and

trailed by only one at halftime, 38 to 37. However, a 44-point production in the final two quarters by the Pointers proved to be the deciding point, as Turkey Run netted only 27. High point man for the Pointers was again Fred Cox, who tossed in 26. In the rebounding depart-

ment Cox also led with 12. As a team, the Pointers only outgrabbed their hosts by three, 49 to 46. From the field, Bainbridge hit a snappy .478, making good on 34 of 71 shots. Both teams had their troubles at the free throw line, Bainbridge making 14 of 31 and Turkey Run able to cash in only six of 16 attempts. Bainbridge will be idle until the 7th of December when they will entertain New Ross and be after their sixth straight win.

REELSVILLE — Reelsville’s Indians got back on the winning track last night by beating Dugger 66 to 58 , after being sidelined last Saturday night by Cloverdale. Ron Wallace was the top scorer for Reelsville, as he netted 19points. The game was nip and tuck until the middle of the fourth quarter when Reelsville pulled it out of the fire. The Indians are now 4-2 on the season and will host Roachdale on Dec. 6. In last night’s B-Team game, Reelsville won, 43 to 24.

that is going to keep any boy out for a long period of time, just the first few games. But after that, we should be ready to go if we can iron out a few mistakes that we are making right now.” With McCracken in the role as the coach, it’s a pretty safe bet hat the Tiger Cubs will make a .espectable showing on their way to an interesting, but successful season. After tonight’s lid-lifter, GHS will play host in its next three games. In addition to Cloverdale, Howe is scheduled to come calling Dec. 6, followed the next night by Rockville. In the only other regular season game in the county, Cloverdale will have its sights set on a fifth straight win to keep its perfect record intact against Cascade at home. If they succeed, and if the Tiger Cubs get their job done at Crawfordsville, 20-point loser to Lebanon last weekend, the Saturday night tangle should make for a pretty good opener in the brand new GHS Gym.

Six lettennen return to wrestling squad at Greencastle High

By MIKK CHRON Sports Editor With six returning letter winners in wrestling back from last season, Greencastle coach Joe Fiedler already has watched his grapplers come from behind and post their first win of the year. Lettermen on the ‘68 team include Teddy Brewer, Phil Gruenholz, Don Ellis, Mark Monnett, Dusty Brewster, and John Goff. Goff, Brewer-and Brewster are the tri-captains of this year’s team. Fiedler, who lost two lettermen last year, feels this club is a better balanced one than the ‘67 group. “We were inexperienced last year and we only had two or three lettermen come out. “Also,” Fiedler continued, there were only about 16 boys who even came out for the sport last year, whereas this year we have 32.” In last year’s accomplish - ments, the grapplers finished third in the conference meet, and in sectional competition they placed seventh. Brewer was a first runnerup in the sectional, losing out on a decision in a close match. Guarded optimism could best describe the Greencastle coach, but he does feel the team has overall improvement over last year’s squad and feels a better dual meet record will be posted this year.

A pin by Phil Gruenholz coupled with a pin by Dave Newgent, a 165-pounder, the gap was narrowed to only two points, 23 to 25. The final five winning points were scored by GHS resulting from Edgewood’s forfeit in the heavyweight division of the meet. The wrestlers will next take on University High School from Bloomington on Tuesday in this year’s first home meet. Wrestlers and their weight classes are as follows: 95 lbs.—Steve Schneider 103 lbs.—Mark Butler 112 lbs. — Teddy Brewer 120 lbs. — Phil Gick or Mike Kirk 127 lbs.—Don Ellis * 133 lbs. --Jack Berry 138 lbs.--Dusty Brewster* 145 lbs.—John Goff* 154 lbs.—Phil Gruenholz* 165 lbs.--Mark Monnett* or David Newgent 175 lbs. —Pat Luzar Heavyweight Mark Albright * Lettermen ‘68-69 Schedule DECEMBER

* In their first meet of the season against Edgewood High School (Ellettsville), Fiedler’s wiry crew chalked up a 28 to 25 victory after falling behind 23 to five at one point in the Monday match.

A pin by Steve Schneider and a win on a decision by Brewster made the score 23 to eight before John Goff finished in a tie for two more points while Edgewood also added two more points, their final ones.
