Lighter side
WASHINGTON (UPI) - Of all of the fissures that Presidentelect Nixon will attempt to bridge upon his ascent to the White House, none yawns quite so abysmally as the credibility gap. It is truly the Grand Canyon of social crevasses, and may already be beyond spanning. I am not referring merely to the informational chasm that some critics have attributed to the federal government. The credibility gap is much wider than that, and runs through all aspects of American life. Any time we so much as look out the window we are likely to see something we have difficulty believing. Take something as seemingly trustworthy as a cookbook. A publisher recently sent me a press release about a cookbook with a text i ostensibly written by Sybil Leek. I simply cannot believe that someone named Sybil Leek has written a cookbook. If the author were named Sybil Paprika I could believe it.

I might even accept a Sybil Watercress. But Sybil Leek sends my credulity tumbling into the gap. My disbelief doesn't necessarily mean the announcement is false, of course. I’m only using it to illustrate how prone we are to doubt these days. The grains of salt with which we take any purported verity are flowing freely even in damp weather. Not long ago a nationwide public opinion poll showed that a goodly percentage of the population disbelieved a lot of what they read in the newspapers and saw on television. But how much credence can we place in public opinion polls? If this keeps up we soon won't be able to recognize the truth when it does appear. That’s forsooth. I wouldn’t be so worried about the situation had I not happened to attend an amateur production of “Peter Pan” a few days ago. This play, as you know, has a dramatic scene where the audience must demonstrate a belief in fairies in order to save the life of Tinker Bell. The response was so weak I began to fear she wasn’t going to pull through. She finally rallied somewhat, but I understand she is still on the critical list and the prognosis is unfavorable. Unless something is done about the credibility gap, the next time “Peter Pan” is performed poor Tinker Bell will need an oxygen tent to survive. * * * The United States contains less than six per cent of the world’s land area.
