NEW YORK (UPI) — The stock market today pulled back somewhat in moderate trading. However, observers termed the selloff as a normal reaction following Wednesday’s emotion, al advance which stemmed from the election victory of Republican Richard M. Nixon. In addition, the failure of the expanded Vietnam peace talks to begin on schedule also was viewed as a bearish factor. Shortly before noon, the UPI stock market indicator, measuring all stocks traded, was off 0.24 per cent on 1,381 issues crossing the tape. Declines topped advances, 673 to 453. The Dow Jones industrial average, which reflects movement in the blue chips, also sagged. Steels ranged to more than 2 points lower, possibly the result of price reductions in the industry on hot rolled sheet. Autos moved narrowly while chemicals generally gave ground. Oils were mixed. In the steels, Armco dipped about 2V4 , while U.S. Steel and Bethlehem were about a point lower apiece. Republic and Will armory be used for IVTC institute? INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)-Gov-ernor Branigin will be asked to approve the transfer of an armory at Columbus, which has been declared surplus, to the Indiana Vocational Technical College for use as a job training institute. The IVTC board of trustees Wednesday adopted a resolution asking the governor to approve the transfer. The structure was damaged to some extent by fire and has been declared surplus by the Indiana Armory Board because of reorganization of the guard, so it is no longer in use. Robert C. Riley, IVTC vice president and dean, said the structure was sound fundamentally and would lend itself to training for several types of needed job skills. He mentioned farm machinery mechanics as an example of a specific need in the area. Glenn V. Sample, Zionsville, who has been serving as acting president since the resignation of Frederic M. Hadley, Indianapolis, said he would continue as the acting chief executive for a few more weeks. He said the board had under consideration several pos sible presidents and may want to interview some additional prospects before making a final decision. The board also voted to extend contracts with local school officials for operation of training institutes in Indianapolis and at Versailles, and received a progress report on plans to begin operation of a Bloomington hotel as a training center for hotel and motel employes. Alabamy Bound? MONTGOMERY, Ala. (UPI) —Alabama’s 1968 travel promotion campaign theme is “Tell Them You Saw It In Alabama.”

Jones & Laughlin were off in small fractions. Marathon Oil fell more than 1 in its group after jumping 3^8 in the previous session. Marathon and Cities Service said they are holding merger discussions. The latter lost %. Northwest dipped more than 1 among the mixed airlines. Rails
and aircrafts were narrowly irregular. Parke Davis added about l 7 /8 in very heavy trading—turnover of more than 400,000 shares. Rumors circulated the firm may be holding merger talks, but a company spokesman denied any such talks were underway.
CONTRACT BRIDGE By B. Jay Becker (Top Rocord-Holdor in Maators' Individual Championihip Play)
TEST YOUR PLAY
1. You are East, defending against Three Notrump South having opened with a notrump, raised to three by North. West leads the four of spades. You cover the five with the seven, and declarer wins with the queen. South leads the jack of diamonds, which you win with the queen after West and dummy follow low. What would you play now? NORTH 4 10 9 5 V K J 4 K 9 7 6 3 dfrK 10 2 EAST 4 7 2 * 984 3 4Q42 4 AQ J5 2. You are declarer with the West hand at Six Spades and North leads the jack of hearts, which you win with the king. How would you play the hand? (Assume that the trumps are divided 3-2.1
4 K Q J 5 9 A K 4 AQ 4A9862
N W E S
4 A 10 9 3 9 7 4 9653 4K J 104
1. The proper return is the five of clubs. This play is almost sure to defeat the contract. Judging from declarer’s play to the first two tricks, it is highly likely that partner has the ace of diamonds. South's hand probably looks something like this: 4AKQ 9AQ5 4J 10 8 49863. That would be consistent with his notrump bid ' 16 to 18 points) and his first two plays. He could hardly have the ace of diamonds and attack the suit without playing the ace first.
It is impossible for West’s spades to be good enough to justify a spade return. South s weak spot is obviously' clubs and that is the place to attack. Note that the five, not the queen or jack, is led. As soon as West gets in with the ace of diamonds. he returns a club to defeat the contract. 2. Draw three rounds of trumps, ending in your hand, and cash the ace of hearts, discarding a diamond from dummy. Now lead a dub to the king. If both opponents follow suit, you are sure to make the contract. Continue with the jack and, if South follows low, finesse. If the jack wins, you make six or seven, while if it loses to the queen, you are still sure of six. North must yield a ruff and discard or lead a diamond to your A-Q. If South shows out on the jack of clubs, the contract is still secure. Win the club with the ace and put North on lead with a club, forcing him to make a losing return.
