By JOHN RIGOS ATHENS (UPI) -Police and youths fought in the streets of Athens at the funeral of former Premier George Papandreou Sunday in the biggest demonstration against the militarybacked regime since it came to power in April, 1967. Chanting “Papandreou, Papandreou, you are our leader,” “today we vote” and “down with fascism,” the demonstrators marched defiantly past police and security men in Constitution Square in the center of town, alongside the body of Papandreou who died Friday at age 80. Police suddenly charged, en-
circled a group of young men and after some clubbing and pushing arrested three boys and a girl. Other arrests elsewhere on the route of the funeral procession brought the total to about 3, a police spokesman said, “Although we are here to pay final tribute to a national leader, this demonstration is more than that,” said one welldressed Athenian. “The people of Greece have had little opportunity to express their opinions on the present military regime. Today we have that opportunity and we hope the world will get our message,” he said.
SCS announces sale of 54,182 country scenes
A set of lO-per-cent lithographs of a country scene in Indiana and 49 other states of America, plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, has turned into the most popular photographic series ever produced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During the last two years, beauty-loving Americans have bought more than 2.8 million of the “America the Beautiful” prints, including more than 390,000 singles and 47,000 sets. The series, now in its second printing, was developed by the Soil Conservation Service. George Murphey, Work Unit Conservationist in charge of SCS operations in Putnam County, announced today that Indiana sales of these colorful country scenes now total 54,182. Captioned “French LickWatershed Reservoir and Recreation Area,” our State scene is an aerial view of deep blue water surrounded by woodland in full fall splendor. The colorful series has been displayed in meeting halls, banks, outdoor fairs, museums, and airports. Prints hang in homes, stores, schools, and libraries and in many offices, including those of Congressmen. Foreign visitors have taken sets home with them, and a set was shown at a professional meeting in Canada last year. “America the Beautiful” prints have been bought and framed for use as prizes and awards, cut up for scrapbooks and doll houses, and used in TV shows and exhibits. Each print is in striking natural Radio election poll SOUTH BEND, Ind, (UPI)— A South Bend radio and television station, WNDU, Monday night polled a sampling of St. Joseph County residents as to their preference among the three candidates on today’s presidential ballot, and Republican Richard Nixon won with a 40 per cent vote. A station spokesman said the poll was conducted on the candidates for president the night before the election because similar election-eve pollings of St. Joseph County have selected the next president in all but one of the elections this century. The random sample was selected by a system devised by members of the sociology department at the University of Notre Dame. Names were selected from the telephone directory.

Police, anticipating leftist demonstrations, were placed along the route of the cortege and around the Athens Municipal cemetery where Papandreou, a staunch opponent of the regime and leader of the former Center Union Party, was buried in a simple grave by the Athens municipality. A cry of “no” filled the air at one point. With it, both supporters and opponents of Papandreou fell into line and followed the procession toward the cemetery. The cry of “no” was interpreted as an answer to the government campaign which successfully urged Greeks to vote “yes” in a September referendum on a new constitution that sharply limits civil rights. As the cortege passed each new group of spectators burst into the Greek national anthem. Archbishop leronymos, the primate of Greece, officiated during funeral service at the Athens cathedral. The services were attended by four former prime ministers of Greece, a representative of the military government and a representative of self-exiled King Constantine H, who forced Papandreou’s resignation three years ago.

South dealer. North-South vulnerable. One of the fascinations of the game is that it is sometimes possible to salvage what appears to be an utterly hopeless contract. Here is an unusual case where declarer managed to overcome an unlucky trump division. West led the king and another spade, which declarer ruffed. There did not seem to be much to the play of the hand until declarer led the trump ace at , trick three and East unexpectedly showed out. It now seemed impossible to avoid losing a diamond and two trumps for down one, but our stouthearted South found a method of play to make the contract. Abandoning further trump leads for the moment, he entered dummy with a club and ruffed the jack of spades to reduce his trump holding to the K-7 alone. Declarer then cashed the A-K
of clubs and A-K of diamonds in preparation for the endplay position he hoped to attain. With four tricks to go, this was the position: North 4 10 6 3 48 West East 4 Q *96 4 Q J 9 4 Q 10 South 4 K 7 4 96 When declarer now led the eight of diamonds from dummy to East's ten. West could do no better than discard the queen of spades, since ruffing his partner's trick would automatically have presented South with the contract. And when East then continued with a diamond. South following suit, West found that he could make only one trump trick instead of the two he had previously seemed destined to make. He ruffed the diamond return with the jack, but then had to lead a trump away from the Q-9 to present declarer with the last two tricks.
