HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—“Soul,” a one-hour Negro variety special modeled after “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In,” was presented on NBC.TV Thursday night. If it gets a strong popular reception, it may be turned into a series. It was no accident that “Soul” resembled “Laugh-In,” because Thursday night’s special was put together by the same production firm that created the hot Rowan and Martin series. As usual, the gags took potshots at everybody and everything in sight, but with the same general good nature as “Laugh-In”—even the rough barbs. So much for the basic details. As a special, “Soul” was a straightaway smash hit. It was, for instance, superior overall to the original “Laugh-In” special that resulted in a series. The superiority came Thursday night in the high-style mixture of song and dance keyed to the basic comedy structure, whereas the original “LaughIn” special did not have the luxury of such a musical cushion. Comedy Material Consistent One tremendous advantage of the rousing musical support is that the comedy doesn’t have to be spread quite as thin, which means a higher proportion of successful gags. The original

“Laugh-In” did not have the same consistency of comedy material as did “Soul.” “Soul” was that rare show business sight—a collection of showstoppers, almost without pause. The cast was virtually all black, and included singer Lou Rawls, a great stylist who revealed much presence and poise as the closest thing to a host. Other performers included Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, driving singer Joe Tex, the Chambers Brothes, the superb H. B. Barnum orchestra, Leroy “Sloppy” Daniels, George Kir. by, Redd Foxx, Slappy White, Nipsey Russell, the Soul Sisters and Hines, Hines and Dad—all accompanied by an attractive group of singers, dancers and jokesters. Watts Contribution In addition, there was material by fresh talent from the Watts Writers’ Workshop in Los Angeles. Mark Warren was the director, and George Schlatter, who produces “Laugh-In” was also at the helm for “Soul.” There were, of course, Multpile Contract HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — George Kennedy, on the strength of his Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in “Cool Hand Luke,” has signed a multiple picture contract with Universal.

everyone else, thus taking a weapon away from offended comedic targets. If “Soul” becomes a series, I have a hunch the ratings will go sky high and that the show will become every bit of the sensation that “Laugh-In” is.
