U..S. scientist Nobel finalist STOCKHOLM (UPI)-The faculty of medicine at the Royal Caroline Institute today began final deliberations between American and French scientists for a winner of the 1968 Nobel prize for medicine. Institute sources identified the American finalist as Dr. Marshall Warren Nirenberg, a public health service biochemist from Washington, D.C. who discovered the cell’s role in passing along physical charac. teristics from one generation to the next. The unidentified French scien. tist developed a drug now widely used in the treatment of mental disease. The 50-member faculty began with a list of nearly 100 candidates for the 1968 prize and the $70,000 cash award that goes with it. There was a possibility Nirenberg and the Frenchman would share the award. In 1967, the prize for medicine and physiology went to Ranger Franit of Sweden and two American scientists, Haldan Keffer Hartline and George Wald. Judges named by the Norwegian parliament last week selected French jurist Rene Cassin to receive the first Peace Prize awarded since 1965. Cassin helped write the U.N. Declaration on Human Rights in 1946. The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters will announce its selection for the prize in literature Thursday, and the Royal Academy of Science will choose the winners of the physics and chemistry prizes Oct. 30.
