Youth swing to Humphrey; fear others

By STEVEN GERSTEL ST. LOUIS, MO. (UP!)— Disenchanted students are starting to give Hubert H. Humphrey their active support, not because they are more enthused by the vice president but because they dread Richard M. Nixon or George C. Wallace getting into the White House. The students are not only

moving without their titular leader Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy who remains a holdout, but actually pressuring the hero of the Democratic primaries to join them. Humphrey, who can be very frank in his assessments, concedes that neither his policies nor his personal popularities are the key factors in

bringing the young people or the students into the campaign. In a Kansas City, Mo., television interview Tuesday, (KMBC.TV) Humphrey said, “There has been a very substantial change in the attitude on the part of the young people. “1 think that was in part due to my Salt Lake Citv speech

(his major policy statement on Vietnam) but also to the fact that they are facing up to the alternative.” The mood of the young apparently changed with the Salt Lake speech and with the realization that Humphrey’s defeat would probably put Nixon into the White House. Before that, Humphrey was

almost continuously heckled byantiwar demonstrators, most of them students. Since then, however, the hecklers have almost disap. peared, even on college campuses, and have been replaced by students willing to vote and work with the vice president. “I feel a very definite forward movement,” Humphrey

said in the television interview. “I hope that what we have going now is sufficiently well timed so that we can come breaking through in those last couple of days, or at least the last week of the campaign, to a victory in November and we expect to do so.” Humphrey, admittedly behind, is setting a torrid campaign pace that is likely to last until election day. In St. Louis, Humphrey scheduled the following: A greeting to high school

students, a question-and-answer session with housewives, a visit to a shopping center, a downtown rally and two television shows.

After that, Humphrey planned to fly to New York City,"to speak at the traditional A1 Smith dinner before going on to Detroit to spend the night. •

Thirty-one of the missionaries are from Germany, six from Finland, four from Switzerland. three from Italy and two each from the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. •
