October 6th to 12th was national 4-H week. Putnam County did not have any big celebration during this time, but we did have our annual 4-H achievement meeting at the beginning of the celebration. I would like to list some of the statistics that might be of interest in the 4-H program. The theme of 1968 national 4-H week is 4-H A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY. A world of opportunity awaits every boy and girl in 4-H. An opportunity to develop better citizenship. Citizenship to 4-H develops growth in two ways. First; to understanding by using your heads to clearer thinking for gaining information and for feeling responsibility. Second; two skills using hands, Healthy minds and bodies put into practice what 4-H’ers understand and feel they should do. You may have noticed that I used some words that stand for the 4-H’ers. That is Heads, Hands, Health, and Heart. Maybe I should remind you of the 4-H pledge. I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyality, my hands to larger service, my health to better living, for my club, my community, and my country. We hope that 4-H members follow this pledge that they will become better citizens. This is one of the things that we would like to develop in our country and this is better citizenship. I would like to quote a letter that President Johnson wrote it goes: “Dear 4-H members you have my best wishes as you prepare for the 1968 observance of national 4-H week. You can be proud of your accomplishments and I will assure you that the nation shares your pride. The 4-H program benefits Americans of all ages and walks of life and through the head, heart, hands, health plan its good results have spread to over 75 nations abroad. Hope that your friends will be encouraged by your example to join 4-H. Insure better goals for new homes and communities and better understanding of the challenges of our trying time. Lyndon B. Johnson.” In our nation there are over two and one quarter million 4-K members with over three hundred and fifthy thousand leaders. In the state of Indiana there are over ninety four thousand members who take nearly two hundred thousand projects annually. There are about forty projects for members to choose from depending on which county they are enrolled. The foods project has the largest enrollment followed by clothing, and crafts. Projects such as livestock, electricity, wildlife, horse & pony are close
behind. In Putnam county there are 1100 4-H members with 55 adult leaders. 4-H is for boys and girls from 10 to 19. They can join the year of their 10th birthday, and can be in through the year of their 19th birthday. This means that a boy or girl can be in 4-H up to ten years. This year in Putnam County we have 15 ten year members. I think this is quite an outstanding feat in itself, that there are this many ten year members in the county. Included are Floreen Danforth of Reelsville, who is a freshman at Purdue University, Nancy McGaughey of Russellville, sophomore at Purdue University, Vickie Aker Rollings from Greencastle, sophomore at Purdue University, Jerry Sinclair, Cloverdale, Vincennes University, Eddie Britton, Roachdale, sophomore at Purdue University, Harry Ludlow, Roachdale sophomore at Ball State, Pat Samsel, Putnamville, Beautician at Terre Haute, Roger Ader, Bainbridge, freshman at Indiana State, Steve Albin, Clinton Township, fresh, man at an Illinois college, Judy Nichols , Bainbridge at home, Mike Buis, Belle Union, sophomore at Purdue University, Gaylord Vaughn, Belle Union, farming, Allan Sutherlin of Fillmore, sophomore at Purdue University, Vicki Judy, Bainbridge, sophomore at Indiana State, Carolyn Smith, Bainbridge sophomore at Indiana University. These young men and young women deserve a big pat on the back for their accomplishments in 4-H during the ten years of their membership. Other interesting information is the club congress winners from Putnam county over the past several years. I have found records that go back as far as 1946 and it is interesting to see who did attend the congresses since that time. They are Fred Sutherlin, Mary Frances Torr, Wendell Brattain, Marjorie Whitman, Catherine Cook, Marilyn McElroy, Jackie Stewart, Joyce Sibbitt, John Ziener, Marjorie Farmer, Marvin Evens, Harley Sutherlin, Bernie Harris, Joe Ziener, Richard Friend, Carolyn Brown, Larry Ray, Joe Friend, Doretta Harris, Bo Akers, Judy McNary, Don Sibbitt, Norma Stanger, Steve Akers, Leroy Ziener, Sandra Sibbitt, Linda Niles, Cathy Niles, Carolyn Torr, and Marie McKee. There are possibly some others that I did not have names of but I did find that these people have attended club congress at national 4-H camp. Many of the girls have married and you probably know them with Continued on Page 16
