V I , : : : ! : : : i VI HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—With a little more taste, Monday night’s one-hour Mitzi Gaynor variety special on NBC-TV might have been a knockout. She is a versatile and talented lady. Above all, she is one of that fast-vanishing show business breed—a genuine trouper. In Las Vegas, her act never fails to score tremendously with audiences. She sings and dances well, has a way with a comedy line and gives 100 per cent. Monday night she revealed

Besides, all the guys I know think she’s sexy. I guess maybe she Is. But If you want to see sex appeal, catch Barbra Streisand in “Funny Girl.” Talent can make you believe anything.

her abilities when the writing and direction showcased her properly. However, there were just enough instances of questionable guidance to take the final shine off the hour. Above all, she was ill-served by weak, gimmicky and corny lines she was compelled to use for her opening and closing, and the transitions between her numbers. Her tendency to be somewhat over cute did not help these remarks eighter. Nor was it particularly tasteful to go from a production number into a gas company commercial. And, as a final drawback, the occasionally excessive laughter and applause sounded unnatural and offensive. So much for most of the main complaints. For when the material and direction were good, she was very good, and that’s as much as you can ask of an entertainer. For example, there was a sequence of takeoffs on late Muddy Menu FLAMINGO, Fla. (UPI) — The pre-dinner toast of wood Ibises in Everglades National Park might well be “here’s mud in your eye.” Visitors on the way to the Flamingo tourist center in the wildlife sanctuary sometimes see these birds scratching the bottom of shallow ponds to muddy the water. This causes the fish to rise to the surface and thus brings meals within easy reach of nine-inch beaks.
