No longer just a number, Lolich is alive and living
By FRED McMANE UPI Sports Writer ST. LOUIS (UPI)—Mickey Lolich is no longer just a number on the scorecard. The 28-year.old lefthander of the World Champion Detroit Tigers became only the eighth player in World Series history Thursday to win three games in one series when he stopped the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 in the decisive seventh game. For the Tigers the victory climaxed a goal that had taken 23 years to achieve and for Lolich it meant an escape from anonymity. Finally somebody knows who I am," said the happy Lolich in the Tigers’ racuous clubhouse following the game. "Mickey
Lolich has never been a hero with the Tigers. Lolich has always been a number on the roster. I’ve always won my 14 or 15 games, but there have always been .300 hitters and 20game winners. "All of a sudden I’m getting a share of the glory and I’m still not used to it. Right now I’m still the happiest man in the world," he added. Although Lolich won 17 games for the Tigers this year, he received little publicity as Denny McLain grabbed most of the headlines by winning 31 games. But when McLain failed in his first two series starts and Lolich was successful in his first two, it became clear that
Lolich would be Manager Mayo Smith’s choice to pitch the decisive seventh game, if the series went that far. Pitching with only two days rest for the first time this year, Lolich drew Bob Gibson as his opponent for the seventh game and outpitched the Cardinal righthander, who had beaten the Tigers twice in the series. Lolich, who was awarded a new car as the outstanding player in the series, can expect to make a few extra dollars this
winter on endorsements. Not as much as McLain, perhaps, but a good sum. McLain is an accomplished organ player and is booked solidly for the winter. Lolich claims to be a singer with a musical group.

‘‘We’ll go anywhere in the country to sing before anyone who wants to hear us," says Lolich. Somebody should want to listen now.

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)—Football and politics don’t mix, at least as far as Notre Dame girdiron coach Ara Parseghian is concerned. Parseghian sent a telegram to William Ruckelshaus, the Republican nominee for senator, Thursday night objecting to the use of his name on a Ruskelshaus billboard in downtown Indianapolis. The telegram was publicized by the office of Ruckelshaus’ opponent, incumbent Democrat Birch Bayh. "I strongly object to the use of my name . . . which clearly implies my endorsement of your candidacy,’’ Parseghian’s message said. "I submit that it would have been ethically proper for your office to seek my approval for the use of my name in this context ... I have been placed in the embarassing position of having to confirm or deny that I had granted the use of my name in such political advertising." Ruckelshaus’ office said the matter had been turned over to the advertising agency which handles the billboards.

Nobody has been able to beat the Oakland Raiders in regular season play since the New York Jets last turned the trick over a year ago.
That makes 14 in a row for the defending AFL champions. A win Sunday against San Diego would tie a league record, set by the Chargers over the 1960-61 seasons.
"We are going to have to be at our best to beat them,’’ San Diego Coach Sid Gillman admits. But with fullback Brad Hubbert and tight end Willie Frazier out, even their best may not be enough.
