Buck-eyes No. 1 Purdue DePailW Tigers host Aces

CHICAGO (UPI) — The haves polished their offenses and the havenots worried about their defenses in the final day of major contact for Saturday’s grid encounters. Seventh-ranked Ohio State, entertaining the nation’s No. 1 team, Purdue, spent two hours Wednesday rehearsing its punting. Coach Woody Hayes named Brian Donovan to start at left guard in place of injured Tom

Backhus.

Purdue, meanwhile, rehearsed its outside running attack and its passing game. Coach Jack Mollenkopf announced that tight end Marion Griffin and fullback John Handy were off the injured list, leaving the Boilermakers in top shape. Eleventh • ranked Michigan State isn’t planning anything special for the Wolverines at Ann Arbor, but Michigan’s Bump Elliot may have a little something extra in mind for the unbeaten Spartans. Michigan drilled behind closed doors Wednesday, apparently concentrating on a passing attack, little used in three games. Meanwhile, Michigan State’s Duffy Daugherty said, “We’re just going to play a regular game with a sound defense and we’re not going to try anything

special.’’

Indiana’s Johnny Pont worked his Hoosiers against Iowa defenses, noting that the Hawkeyes use seven different defenses and “we have to prepare for all of them.’’ Iowa’s Ray Nagel held a closed-door drill for the homecoming tilt at Iowa City and worried about Hoosier offense. “It’s very explosive and it’s going to be hard for our defense to keep them from scoring.” Northwestern labored on special defenses for its meeting with fifth-ranked Notre Dame. The Wildcats have been mauled on successive weekends by Mi-

able to win this season, drilled against Utah State defenses and offenses. Coach John Coatta worried about the Aggies’ lightning ground attack and smooth passing game. At Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Murray Warmath, playing host

to hapless Illinois Saturday, managed to squeeze a few drops into his crying towel. The Gophers, he said, are still slowed by “nuisance injuries” to such key players as Ray Parson, Steve Lundeen and Alvin Hawes.

WSKOLs Buckeye runners hope for upset.

Fishing report

General Outlook — Fall fishing in Indiana is quite good. But fishermen are cautioned that waterfowl refuges at State Fish and Game Areas and Reservoirs are closed to all entry from October 1, to April 15. Anyone trespassing on these refuges during this time is subject to a fine of up to $300 and possible imprisonment.

West Central — Fishermen are taking lots of bluegills at Monroe Reservoir, pluscrappies on minnows and bass on deeprunning lures. To protect ducks and other waterfowl, fishermen are reminded to stay out of the waterfowl refuges at Monroe Reservoir on the North Fork from Pine Grove upstream and on the Middle Fork from the Monroe • Brown County line upstream. Crappies are hitting on minnows at Cataract Lake plus

Southwest — White perch, sometimes called freshwater drum, are hitting worms at Williams Dam and Hindostan Falls State Fishing Area. Strip pit fishing is slow.

In Greene County, there is good bluegill fishing on worms and bass are taking artificial baits. River fishing is only fair. Sullivan County reports good bluegill fishing. Fishing is slow at Glendale Fish and Game Area.

on “Old Gold Day” Saturday

Greencastle, Ind, (Spl) — Tradition sticks out all over in any college’s homecoming, but DePauw football Coach Tom Mont would just as soon chuck a certain portion of it this Saturday. Though only one short of having as many winning seasons and losing ones in his nine year Tiger administration, Mont has seen his charges drop seven of nine homecoming frays. As a matter of fact the Tigers haven’t won an Old Gold Day game in Blackstock since they battered Centre, 30-8, in 1962. But with one exception they’ve always been decided by six points or less. And so it was in 1966 when this Saturday’s homecoming foe Evansville came to town another time for the alumni centerpiece. DePauw led, 7-0 with six minutes to play, but Evansville won 14-7. Evansville has essentially the same kind of ball club back this year. The Aces opened with a win over Bradley but since have lost to Southeast Missouri, 22-8, and to Ball State 28-3. Super-back Craig Blackford is the big Ace to watch in Saturday’s 2 p.m. game. Blackford is 6-4 and weighs 210 pounds. “Blackford is an exceptional small college passer,” according to Mont. “He stays in the pocket well (and why should he worry?) and he has a quick delivery. He’s not a great runner, but he’ll be hard to bring down when he goes.” Blackford likes to and can throw the bomb. Probably the most worrisome man to Mont is Mike Woodard. Pass receiver, kicker and defensive halfback par excellence, Woodard made the ICC offensive and defensive first teams last year. In last season’s 16-16 draw, he caught one TD pass and kicked a field goal. Somehow, someway he generally has a hand directly in the outcome. That’s why DePauw frets. Six-foot, 215-pound

fullback Ken Mills and 175-pound Don Crane are a couple of other Aces who have continuously made trouble for the Tigers who haven’t beaten Evansville since a 19-7 verdict in 1963. “Evansville by far is the best team we will have faced up to this pqint,” believes Mont. “They have some good athletes in positions that require skill.” And what does 2-1 DePauw, recent 7-3 upset victim of Valparaiso, have? Problems, with a capital “P” and we don’t mean petty. 1. Offense? Quarterback Roy Pottenger remains on the disabled list with a slight shoulder separation. DePauw’s passing threat is therefore limited as a feeble three for 12 effort at Valpo demonstrated.

Mont promised that Mark Massingill, Wayne Schmidt and Dwight Woessner will see considerable action at offensive end. And in anticipation of continued aerial bombardment Mont is training offensive backs John Sacramento and John Long to play defensive backfield spots. Barry Fritsch likewise will be employed elsewhere —probably at defensive end.

2. Offensive end Dave Moore sustained an injury in lab this week and has 15 stitches in one hand. His end-mate Scott Ralston is still hobbling on a sore knee.

Tigger middle guard Dick Schulte of Indianapolis drew uncommon praise for his work at Valparaiso. “Schulte played as fine a game of college football as I’ve ever seen,” Mont said. I’ve never seen a lineman do as consistently good a job as Schulte did for us at Valparaiso.” Mont, who watched plenty of big time football linemen for eight years at Maryland, feels Schulte deserves any kind of regional or national sports acclaim he can win. The Indianapolis senior last year was named to the all-ICC second team on defense.

3. Mont feels DePauw’s inexperienced quarterbacks haven’t yet gotten the knack of psyching out enemy defenses and changing plays at the line accordingly.

“We’ve been working awfully hard this week on improving our running game. We’ve just got to run better than we have,” Mont said. Normally a good running club, DePauw has averaged barely over 2 yards per carry in three games. Only QB Ron McBride has gathered more than 100 yards rushing.

A

His offensive line hit well against Valpo, Mont felt, but he said the seven Tiger backs he used just weren’t hitting the hole quick enough.
