Television in Review By RICK DU BROW

By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—A very early ratings survey of 30 key markets indicates that NBCTV’s “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” is socking it to the other shows spectacularly this new season. Although it is rather early in the season to be making ratings judgments, all the statistics thus far—daily and otherwise— -Calendar Symposium on Law, Liberty and Progress-Speaker; Dr. Charles Malik, Professor of Philosophy, The American U., Beirut, Lebanon; Former President, the U.N. General Assembly; Panel Discussion; Charles Malik, Sidney Hook, Richard Hatcher and MeGeorge Bundy, 7:30 p.m., Gobin Church Duzer Du Play; “Every Man”, 3:15 p.m., Speech Hall Saturday, Oct. 12 Alumni Registration begins at Tent outside Student Union, 9:00 a.m., Symposium on Law, Liberty and Progress—Speaker: McGeorge Bundy, President of the Ford Foundation and former Special White House Assistant for National Security, 10:30 a.m., Gobin Church Pre-game Luncheon for all Old Gold Day Guests— Speaker, Coach Tom Mont, 12:00 noon, Ballroom UB Football, DePauw vs Evansville, 2:00 p.m., Blackstock Stadium Hogate Hall Open House for Alumni, 4:30 — 5:30 p.m., S. Locust St. Duzer Du Play: “Every Man”, 8:15 p.m., Speech Hall Sunday, Oct. 13 Hogate Hall Open House for Community, Faculty,Staff, 2:30—4:30 p.m., S. Locust St.

are unquestionably clear in establishing the “Laugh-In” position. The 30-market survey ranked “Laugh-In” second only to CBSTV’s new “Mayberry R.F.D.” series. And although “Mayberry R.F.D.”—the successor to the Andy Griffith show—probably earned its high rating mainly because of Griffith’s fictional marriage on the opening episode, it is still an impressive start. Laugh-In Success The more decisive national ratings, which tend to put more emphasis on the provinces and upgrade less sophisticated shows in the rankings, will nevertheless also prove the remarkable “Laugh-In” success against two CBS.TV big guns “Gunsmoke” and Lucille Ball. Early in the season Orinot, the 30-market survey also tends to substantiate the beliefs of close watchers of the numbers race that NBC-TV’s “Julia” is already a hit, and that CBSTV’s Doris Day situation comedy is likewise a solid success. Both of these are new series. And “Julia,” the most publicized of the freshman entries, is the first major network series to star a Negro actress, Diahann Carroll. “Julia” fin. ished fourth in the 30-market rankings, and Miss Day’s show came in eighth. Top Shows The remainder of the top 15 —DPU was set up when the losers got good field position on a punt at the Valpo 38. The Mont men worked it to the 28, but McBride threw his first pass of the game into the hands of Valpo’s Dwight Bleke at the 18. Two series later Tiger defensive wingman Jim Davis fell on a Valpo fumble at the 11. Long ran for two to the nine, Sacramento scooted to the five, but Long was dropped for no gain on third and four. On fourth down—the first play of the second quarter—Sacramento hit his field goal. DePauw is now 2-1 for the campaign with Evansville due here Saturday for an Old Gold Day battle. Kickoff time for this expected homecoming sellout is 2 p.m.

shows were—except for “Mayberry R.F.D.”—all veteran series, such as “Family Affair,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Corner Pyle,” and the movies, as well as the Dean Martin, Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball programs, and a Bob Hope special. Among the other new shows that indicated possible ratings strength were “The Mod Squad,” “The Good Guys,” “Land of the Giants,” “Here Come the Brides,” “The Outsider,” “The Ghost and Mrs.

Muir” and “The Outcasts.” The new series that failed to show initial ratings power in the 30-market survey — although some may do better in the national rankings — included; “Hawaii Five-O,” “That’s Life,” “Blondie,” “Adam-12,” “Lancer,” “The Ugliest Girl in Town,” “Journey to the Unknown,” the big-budget “Name of the Game,” “The New Adventure of Huckleberry Finn” and the Phyllis Diller and Don Rickies shows.
