WASHINGTON (UPI) — A Treasury official said the other day that either the U.S, auto industry or the federal government must take “aggressive” steps to build small cars to compete with foreign imports. When I first glanced at this item, I thought the official was suggesting that the government itself start building small cars. It turned out, however, that he had something else in mind. Nevertheless, it is interesting to speculate as to what kind of cars the government might build if the government did build cars. Washington—The Bureaucrat Six, the first car ever built by the federal government, rolled off the assembly line here today. Designed to compete with small foreign imports, the Bureaucrat introduces a new concept in automotive engineering by having its motor in the center of the car. Harley Wirthit, deputy assistant vice undersecretary for production, said the decision to place the motor in the middle was made by the committee that put the car together. “The committee c o u 1 d n’t agree on whether the motor should be in the front or in the rear, so they compromised,” Worthit explained. He admitted, however, that some members of the commit, tee were not pleased with the compromise. “They felt a better compromise would have been to put motors at both ends,” he said. Another new feature is the Bureaucrat’s body style, which

is in the shape of a filing cabinet. “There are two basic models,” Worthit said. “A twodrawer coupe and a four-drawer sedan.” The Bureaucrat also has a new safety feature. Instead of using seat belts, the occupants will be held in their seats with paper clips. There are no doors on the car. They have been replaced by “in” and “out” baskets. Neither does the Bureaucrat have a trunk. Where the trunk would normally be, it has a briefcase. “The cars will be sold at federal agencies all over the country,” Worthit said. “However, you can only buy them in triplicate.” Asked why the Bureaucrat was equipped with 49 spare tires, he said “that part of the car was built by the Pentagon.”

Dutch Cars AMSTERDAM (UPD—Holland expects to have 2 million Dutch-owned cars on its roads in 1968. With a population of 12.5 million, this figure may not look impressive but this small and most densely populated country in the world already has the world’s highest road traffic density.

Driving Tip MONTGOMERY, Ala. (UPI) —W. D. Gunter, Alabama’s Truck Driver of the Year, has a good rule for the highway: “Drive as though your family was in the other car.” Gunter, who has 1.8 million miles of accident-free driving on record in his tractor-trailer truck, urges motorists to try giving up their own right of way to prevent an accident. He describes defensive driving as “preventing accidents in spite of the incorrect actions of others and adverse conditions.”
