Primaries choose candidates in three states

By United Press International Voters in Massachusetts, Oklahoma and Washington state were choosing congressional and state candidates for the November ballot in primary elections today. In Massachusetts, three veteran congressmen were challenged for renomination while four others went unopposed in either the primary or general election. Rep. Edward P. Boland, DMass., a friend of the Kennedy

brothers, was expected to have a close race with former Springfield Mayor Charles V. Ryan as Boland sought nomination for a ninth congressional term. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, DMass., campaigned for Boland in Kennedy’s first political appearance since the assassination of his brother, Robert, in June. Rep. Torbert H. MacDonald, D-Mass., who once roomed with John F. Kennedy at Harvard,

was seeking nomination to an eighth term over the opposition of the Rev. John D. Elder, assistant dean of Harvard Divinity School. Rep. Philip J. Philbin, DMass., a 25-year House member, was opposed by three other Democrats. Vying to oppose him were Republicans Malcolm E. Peabody, brother of former Democratic Gov. Endicott Peabody, and former Rep. Laurence Curtis. In Oklahoma, Tulsa lawyers Pat Malloy, 48, and John

Jarboe, 28 competed in a run-off election to face incumbent Rep. Page Belcher, a Republican. Belcher and the state’s other five, incumbent congressmen— four Democrats and a Republi-can-won nomination in the first primary. In Washington, interest centered on the Democratic gubernatorial race and the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor. Two congressmen were unopposed and four congressmen and Democratic Sen.

Warren G. Magnuson faced only token opposition. In the state house race Atty. Gen. John J. O’Connell was expected to run ahead of state Sen. Martin J. Durkan and Negro lawyer Jack Tanner of Tacoma. Republican Gov. Dan Evans was expected to win renomination easily.

Another Negro, Art Fletcher, a city councilman from Pasco, was given an even chance in a Democratic contest for lieutenant governor that included hydroplane driver Bill Muncey.

—Lighter side them. It’s the closest I’ve ever come to being a celebrity. Quite often, two or three guests who are unable to get my attention during the party will ask if they can come around and see me later. My appointment book is full for the next two weeks and there is a sizeable waiting list. I’m thinking now of setting up some sort of fee system, the amount depending on the novelty of the experience that is recounted. The charges probably will range as follows:

— Ran into tear gas barrage while trying to return to hotel $1.00. — Accidentally struck by fly. ing “We love Mayor Daley” poster. $2.00. — Accidentally struck by falling “We love Mayor Daley” billboard. $4.00. — Hustled out of convention hall by security guards after being mistaken for a Wisconsin delegate. $3.00. — Accidentally stabbed with a McCarthy button. $1.50. — Tripped over a hippie. $0.75.

Otters Protected SAN FRANCISCO 'CPI< — California sea otters once flocked in herds of thousands alone the entire West Coast, from Baja California m Mexico to the straits of Juan de Fuca in Washington. Now less than 700 of the animals remain in the Pacific waters off southern Monterey County and northern San Luis Obispo County in California. This is because the otters, prized for their fur, were hunted nearly to extinction during the last century and the early 1900s. The animal is now protected by law.
