Detroit, to meet St. Louis in 1968 World Series

By FUEL) DOWN UPI Sports Writer The Detroit Tigers’ superstars toasted a .198-hitter and a pitcher who spent the last month in the doghouse when the champagne corks popped in celebration of the city’s first

American League pennant since 1945. Even Denny McLain, the majors’ first 30-game winner in 34 years, played the role of a mere cheerleader Tuesday night when the Tigers paid bubbly tribute to a pair of unlikely heroes—third baseman Don Wert and pitcher Joe Sparma.

It looks as if it’s going to be a soccer-to-me season at DePauw University this fall. Head coach Charlie Erdmann has a dozen varsity letter men back from the surprising 1967 soccer team that compiled a 5-4-1 record. The only unfortunate thing about the approaching campaign is that the kickers have to open against powerhouse Wheaton College with barely less than a week of practice. That match is set for Saturday, Sept. 21 in Wheaton. The 1968 roster looks remarkably like last years. Erdmann can call on the like of flashy Larry Tasha from West Cameroon, three-sport letterman Paul Mitchell, plus three-year veterans Vin Hoey, Bill Doepke, Price Ivins ai.d Rick Fanyo. Beyond these veterans Erdmann also has able lettermen in Jeff Brown, Stu White, John Currant, Charles Hershey, “Poke— Miles, Jim Graninger, and John Erdmann. Probably the brightest prospect among the newcomers in Charles Roberts, a freshman who played soccer on Liberia’s national soccer team. Thirty-eight men are out for the squad, according to Erdmann. “Without a doubt this will be the best coordinated soccer effort we’ve had so far in the history of the sport at DePauw,” Erdmann said this week. (DePauw played its first soccer on its new Boswell field in 1965 on a club status. It went varsity in 1966 and had an 0-8-0 record.

Wert, a sub-.200.hitter who was hitless in three previous trips to the plate, singled with two out in the ninth inning to drive in A1 Kaline with the winning run in the Tigers’ 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees. The victory, the Tigers’ eighth straight, enabled them to win the flag “in the

Frosh defeat Warriors A first half four-yard sweep by Greencastle’s David Fields and an extra point plunge by the freshman halfback was all the scoring needed for the frosh Tiger Cub team to move their win string to seven games in defeating Danville here last night 7-0. It was the second win in as many games for the yearlings who won all five eighth grade games last year. The Cubs were inside the 10 yard line four times in the second half, but failed to score. Announcing your next car: It can surround you with a fuselage. A sweeping new design where body and frame are one.

Your next car can be a gently curving line of tempered glass and steel that sweeps quietly around you. A molded shell of stressed skin and thousands of miniature welds. Your next car can have a cockpit. Instead of just a seat and a dashboard. Your next car can provide a controlled environment where

the Red Sox’ victory because the Detroit management did not flash it on the scoreboard. A club spokesman said the management feared the fans might pour out onto the field and disrupt the game. Sparma, who had blasted Manager Mayo Smith for taking him out of a game in the early

innings on Aug. 14, pitched a five-hitter to raise his record to 9-10. Sparma gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when his single drove in Bill Freehan, who had singled and reached second on an infield out by Tom Matchick. Sparma carried a three-hitter into the ninth when

the Yankees tied the score on Charlie Smith’s single, an infield out and a single by Jake Gibbs. McLain, Kaline, Willie Horton and all the other superstars who contributed so much to the Tigers’ march to the flag, saluted Wert and Sparma over and over again during the

ed in defiance of the National League champion St. Louis Cardinals, “blow ’em back...blow ’em back...way back’’...and then, specifically referring to the great World Series hero of 19C4 and 19G7, Bob Gibson, “bring on Gibson...bring on Gibson.”
