HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—The remarkable Barbra Streisand, who instinctively wraps up the best f American show business in on luminous talent, brought anothc ' masterpiece to CBS-TV Sundaj night. The hour was a tape of her famous one-woman concert before about 130,000 persons on the Sheep Meadow of New York’s Central Park. It was called “A Happening in Centraf Park.” And it was exactly that. Miss Streisand was a sensation when she first appeared on television, and she is still a sensation of the very first order. She is fantastically theatrical, but it is for real, and the countless young persons in the crowd Sunday — giving her standing ovations— were the proof of how her genuine, whoUy personal talent and demeanor are regarded by the toughest audience of all: Youth. It is hardly necessary to go into Miss Streisand’s abilities in detail again. She is a phenomenal singer, and naturally funnier than virtually every comedian in the business. Romantic Program Sunday night’s outdoor concert was surely one of the most romantic programs ever presented on television. between audience and performer. Miss Streisand looked beautiful, as always. Her musical backing was superb, and her numbers ranged from those of chilling beauty to those that brought gales of laughter. There has never been anybody quite like her. Getting back to more mundane matters, Phyllis Diller’s new NBC-TV variety series arrived Sunday night too. It is about what one would expect, the usual skits, monologues, and so forth. John Carson, Rowan and Martin, and Sonny and Cher lent firepower to the opener, and Director Barry Shear showed his usual ability to get the most out of the least. But Miss Diller’s monologues were too familiar, and one wonders whether there is much strength at the show’s core or in the star’s lasting power. On the opener, by the way, a musical group of little girls— the Pearce Sisters—was the surprise showstopper. They are the hottest kid act since the Osmond Brothers. NLF Airborne Also Sunday night: CBS-TV offered a mildly interesting house organ piece about exCoach Vince Lombardi, produced—are you ready?—by the National Football League. And NBC-TV presented “The New Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” a weekly half-hour of kid stuff combining live action with animation. Nothing for adults. For a Clear View LOS ANGELES (UPI>—For a smog-free view’ of the sky, UCLA has selected Ojai Valley for a training and research observatory. The 24-inch telescope, purchased through a $55,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, includes a photometer to measure the brightness of stars and a spectograph which separates starlight into its various colors. A photoelectric scanner is now under construction at UCLA’s optional shop. The telescope — the 15th largest in California—will be used for the training of graduate students and some seniors in the UCLA astronomy department, who until now had only the venerable six and sev-en-inch telescopes on the Westwood campus.
