Nixon and Hubert H. Humphrey of four hours of prime television and radio time for debates on the issues involved in the presidential election. NBC President Julian Goodman said Wednesday the network, which originally invited the two candidates Aug. 28 to take part in a debate, was proposing a two-hour meeting on Nov. 3, two days before the election, between 9 and 11 p.m. NBC also suggested “two separate one-hour appearances in prime evening time on earlier dates to be worked out with the candidates.” The House Commerce Committee voted Wednesday to suspend the “equal time” requirement in the case of minor candidates, one of the obstacles to a debate between the major contenders. The bill cleared the House Commerce Committee on a 1614 vote Wednesday. —Camporees McBride of Casey and Camporee theme is “Personal Fitness.” Boys from Troops in Clark, Edgar, and Crawford Counties will attend the Blackhawk Camporee. Confetti, jeers mark HHH national campaign
By STEVE GERSTEL WASHINGTON (UPI)-From the East Coast to the West, from the deep South to the North, Hubert H. Humphrey put his presidential campaign to the test. The verdict; “fine ... as good as we can expect,” according to a top campaign aide. Starting from behind in his campaign against Republican Richard M. Nixon, the vice president launched his drive with a three-day whirlwind tour of Philadelphia, Denver, Los Angeles, Houston, and Flint, Mich., before returning to the
seclusion of his high-rise apartment in Washington. In Philadelphia, the crowds were tepid but the confetti was generous; in Denver, the United Mine Workers Union—with nowhere else to go—went wild. Crowds Smaller In Los Angeles, the vice president was almost attacked by two dissenters, and his crowds were smaller than Robert F. Kennedy’s in May; in Houston, he was shunned by the party’s top political leaders. And in Flint, antiwar demonstrators swarmed his car and almost drowned out his speech.
It was an ambivalent reception, it gave Humphrey strategists a chance to assess the first impact of the vice president’s campaign. Humphrey speaks today at dedication ceremonies for the second span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge before flying to Sea Girt, N.J., for a barbecue with Democrats and a day of rest from the hectic
campaign.
The Humphrey strategists lightly dismiss the small crowds and the absence of top political ! leaders at Humphrey gatherings in California and Texas. Anticipate Hectic Weeks “We’ll get even about Oct. 15

Gerstmeyer ran its record to 2-0 with a 40-6 pasting of Princeton. Garfield will play tonight at Mishawaka. Meanwhile, Brazil joined the conference leaders by handing Wiley an 8 to 6 setback and Sullivan dusted off West Vigo 20 to 6, winning its league opener. which seemed very possible. Mrs. Hayden obliged by jumping to seven spades, which became the final contract. (It turned out that seven notrump would have been a better choice, but Mrs. Hayden had no way of knowing whether the six heart bid represented a void in hearts or the ace.) West led the five of diamonds and declarer took the obvious 13 tricks for a score of 1,510 points. At the second table, with Canada now North-South, the bidding went:
The bidding: North East South West Pass Pass 2 4 $ V 6 4 Pass 7 4 Opening lead — five of diamonds. One of the most dramatic hands of the Olympiad occurred in the Women’s Championship during the match between Canada and the United States. The bidding was hectic at both tables. When the U.S. held the North - South cards at the first table, Mrs. Hayden opened third hand with a forcing two club bid and West (Mrs. Begin) made a high-level preempt of five hearts in an effort to hamper any extended North-South exchange of information. But Mrs. Hawes, impressed with her values opposite a forcing two bid, cuebid hearts in an effort to persuade her partner to undertake a grand slam,
North East South West Pass Pass 24 64 Pass Pass 6 4 Here, West (Mrs. Baron) jumped to six hearts over two clubs and thus confronted both North and South with the very' difficult decision of how to proceed. North made a forcing pass and South became declarer at six spades instead of seven. This contract went down four! Mrs. Baron chose the two of hearts as her opening lead. East (Mrs. Walsh) ruffed and returned a low club. Declarer went up with the ace, expecting to easily make the rest of the tricks, but West ruffed and returned a heart which East ruffed, and when East now led the king and another club, South went minus 200 for a team loss of 1,710 points.

and it will be down to the wire from then on,'* one said. “It’s going to be a wild three weeks.” They make it clear, however, that Humphrey cannot and will not compromise on the basic theme of his., campaign—one unified nation with human rights and human opportunities for all. But the Humphrey strategists virtually concede they need a break— one that would make Richard M. Nixon look bad. More than anything else, apparently, Humphrey wants to get Nixon into a nationally, televised debate. The vice president has said he would debate Nixon anywhere, including a hotel lobby, and his backers are hopeful of lining up a face-to-face confrontation in a more suitable setting.
