Teachers remove pickets INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)-While State School Supt. Richard Wells waited for an Indiana attorney general ruling on whether striking East Chicago teachers are violating their contracts, a union spokesman gave Wells a tongue-lashing for interceding in the strike. Meanwhile, as a gesture of good will, the striking teachers removed pickets from the schools Thursday. Wells held a news conference Thursday with East Chicago School Supt. Ernest R. Miller and said union representatives failed to show up for a mediation meeting here. Joe Cascella, national representative of the American Federation of Teachers, said Wells was advised Wednesday there would be no union representatives at the meeting.

' Now that school has started the work in the County Extension Office has changed somewhat. Much of my time is being spent getting ready for the 4-H completion meetings and achievement meetings. There is a great amount of work geeting the records ready to have them judged. There are many awards that are given at the County 4-H Achievement Meeting which will be held at the Greencastle Junior High School on the evening of October 5. All of the achievement medals, trophies, and trip awards will be presented at this time. We are in the process of going to the township 4-H completion meetings now. Roachdale clubs had their award meeting this past Thursday evening. The Franklin Twp. Farm Bureau sponsors this meeting. It is a very nice affair. They have a ham supper with all of the trimmings for the 4-H’ers, their parents, and the Farm Bureau members. Russellville had their completion meeting earlier in the year. Madison Twp. has their meeting scheduled for the evening of Sept. 25, at the number 10 school house. This is also to be a supper sponsored by the Farm Bureau. At these completion meetings, all of the 4-H’ers that completed receive a completion pen. For the program I show slides that I have taken this past year of the 4-H activities. I should say

that these are pictures taken by some of the 4-H’ers and myself. Cathy Niles of Russellville has taken several of the slides. Cathy is the State Achievement winner in photography. Cathy Niles, Carolyn Torr, Greencastle; and Marie McKee, Greencastle; are getting ready to go to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago this fall. They were state 4-H achievement winners this year. Carolyn won her award in crafts and Marie won the State Fair Dress Revue. Mrs. James Hockema is Carolyn and Marie’s adult leader. Cathy’s leader is Mrs. Ralph Logan. The Junior Leader activity will be a hayride on Saturday night, September 21. This will be a very busy day for the Junior Leaders. They will be serving lunch for the Indiana Quarter Horse Show which will be at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, and a meal for a swine show which will be held at the Fairgrounds the same day. They hope to raise enough money to be able to take another trip this fall. They hope to go see a Purdue Football game. We will be missing several of our outstanding Junior Leaders this fall. Many of them have gone to college. We wish them the best of luck. The next few years will be some of the best years of their life.
