WASHINGTON (UPI) — The Cigar Institute of America has published a little booklet entitled “A Married Woman’s Guide to the Married Man.” The institute says it did this "in recognition of the fact that while this may be a man’s world, women are partly to blame.” What it apparently is trying to achieve is greater tolerance and understanding among wives toward the mystique of cigar smoking. It feels that cigars incite feminine hostility mainly because of the old saying "A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke.” Women regard that as an unflattering comparison and it puts them on the defensive when they are around cigars. In an effort to undo some of the damage, the institute takes the tack that cigars actually bring married women love and security. When a married man "surrounds himself with a magic blue cloud” of cigar smoke, he is not drawing odious comparisons. Rather, he is expressing "a primitive, instinctive feeling that all is well.” Symbolically he is saying "The ship is tight. The drawbridge is up. The cave is safe from tigers.” At the same time, he is also being romantic. To his wife he is poetically declaiming, in effect, "I could not love thee, dear, so much—loved I not also my cigar.” Or so the booklet says. I’m sure cigar smokers will look upon the booklet as a public service and I wish that someone would now perform the same service in regard to professional football. My wife can’t seem to understand that when I am watching a game on television, I am actually displaying my affection for her. Last weekend there was a game on Friday evening, two on Saturday evening and one on Sunday afternoon. When I put up the drawbridge again Monday evening, she swam across the moat. "You should be glad I’m watching the game,” I said. "It means our cave is safe from tigers.” "I would rather have it safe
from the Green Bay Packers,” she said. "But I could not love thee, dear, so much—loved I not also the Washington Redskins.” "Then let the Redskins darn your socks,” she said. You see what I mean about the need for a booklet? A good cigar is only tobacco, but football is grounds for divorce.
Lutherans Gain NEW YORK 1 UPI 1 — The three major Lutheran church bodies in the United States reported a baptized membership of 8.711.489 at the end of 1967. an increase of 49.247 members, or .57 per cent, over the preceding year. Together, the three demoninations—the Lutheran Church in America, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and The American Lutheran Church —represent more than 95 per cent of the Lutherans in the United States and Canada.
