Indiana high school “elite” aim for ‘Big Ten” status this week
By KURT FREUDENTHAL INDIANAPOLIS ( U P I ) — Indiana's high school football elite starts aiming for state* wide prestige this week, clamor, ing for “Big 10” status. Results of this week's games will be reflected In the season’s first UPI coaches' board ratings next Wednesday, and after one week’s action, nobody ap* peared to be a shoo-in. Three long winning or unbeaten strings were snapped in last week’s first-of-the-season collisions, the longest the 26game undefeated streak of Marion County’s North Central, ranked third at the end of last season. Also failing to come up victoriously in their intial starts were South Bend Washington, Evansville Reitz and Vincennes — all also members of the “Big 10” last November. Thus, there could be less pressure, barring a loss this week — on mythical defending state champion Richmond, 27-6 winner over Muncie South in its opener last weekend. This will not be the year the guessing game over which is the top eleven in the state can be solved via a genuine playoff system. Such a playoff has been in the discussion stage for at least a couple of years and the last word was the IHSAA is still studying various proposals. Best guesses were it’ll be at least another couple of years before an acceptable playoff plan will be devised. Richmond, perfect last year to gain UPI’s mythical state title for the second time, goes to Dayton Chaminade Saturday Sycamores on road TERRE HATUE, Ind.—Indiana State’s tentative starting lineup for the Sycamores’ first football game of the season Saturday was announced here today by ISU coach Jerry Huntsman. Huntsman, starting his third year at the helm of the I-state gridders, named eight returning lettermen to the offensive unit and eight letter-winners to the defensive squad. In addition, two transfer students who won letters at schools other than ESU will be among the starting 22. State’s offensvie backfield will find junior Verbie Walder (Dayton,O.), a junior college transfer, at quarterback; last year’s leading scorer Jim Brumfield (Elizabeth, Pa.), at running back; sophomore Pete Thompson (Indianapolis North Central), at flanker and the leading ISU rusher the past two years, Dean Klink (Indianapolis North Central), at fullback. The ESU offensive line will have last year’s leading pass receiver Steve Schmid (Attica) at split end; Stan Worrall (Duquesne, Pa.) making the switch from defensive guard to offensive tackle at left tackle; senior co-captain Dave Parkhurst (Miamisburg, O. ) at left guard; place-kicker Timon Kendall (South Bend Adams) at center; sophomore Sam Marra (Washington, Pa.) at right guard; veteran Greg Matafin (South Bend Central) at right tackle and senior letterman Tom Majewski (South Bend Washington) at tight end. Defensively, the Sycamores will have letterman John Knox (East McKeesport, Pa.) at left end; Kansas State transfer Bill Denny ( New Castle, Pa.) at left tackle; sophomore Kent Manwaring (Opp, Ala.) at right tackle and veteran Jeff Keller (Palatine, HI.) at right end. The left outside linebacker will be letterwinner Ron Smith (Jeffersonville), the inside left linebacker will be Butch Penn (New Eagle, Pa.), the right inside linebacker will be Rich Galbraith (Bethal Park, Pa.) and the right outside linebacker will be Don Dunkerley (Glassport, Pa.). The Sycamore defensive halfbacks will be returnee Mike Russell (Seymour) and sophomore Mike Blackwell (Terre Haute Honey Creek), while the safety will be veteran Terry Ogle (Richmond).

before plunging into North Centrat Conference warfare. South Bend Washington, the No. 2 outfit last year but held
to a stalemate by Michigan City in last week’s opener, tries its luck against Goshen Satur. day in another Northern Con-
ference game. Both Reitz and Vincennes, which tied 34-34 in last Friday’s Southern Conference thriller,
again face league rivals— Reitz against city foe Harrison and Vincennes against Evansville North, both Friday.
The week’s top Central Conference clash could be Tipton at Huntington while Bloomington, perhaps the best in the
South Central circuit, should have little trouble at Rushville, both also Friday. Indianapolis titlist Chatard,
