Coatesville news

The Baptist White Lick Convention was held Saturday in the auditorium of the Civic Building. The attendance was particularly large Saturday evening and Sunday morning. These good folks rent the kitchen and the large assembly room and do much of their own cooking. A bread truck and other food venders accomodate them while their convention meetings last.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bottorff returned home Sunday from a two day trip among kinsmen in Clarks County, Indiana. When questioned about crops Mr. Bottorff stated that the corn and Burley tobacco were as good as he had ever seen. He visited a peach orchard 10 miles out of Hanover where the trees covered some 24 acres and one picked his own peaches for three dol-

lars per bushel. Such peaches! No small ones to be seen. Yellow Elbertas were three to three and half inches in diameter. Several fruit lovers were picking the fine fruit and here is how one got the really big ones from the top limbs. A large tin can was fastened to a long, slender pole and the manipulator pushed the can under the big peach gently, and off it came into the can.

Mr. Bottorff states that he picked a bushel in this manner and enjoyed every minute. Mrs. Grace Gambold, widow of the late John J. Gambold passed away at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Vincents Hospital. She had fallen at her home on Wed. and suffered a clot near the base of the brain which brought unconsciousness and death. Mrs. Gambold was reared near

Brownsburg. She was educated there and later became a graduate nurse. She was a member of the Coatesville Methodist Church and belonged to the Church WSCS, the Friday club, Twentieth Century and Present Day organizations. She leaves a son, John J. Gambold, clerk of Hendricks County. She is the stepmother of Robert Gambold of Lafayette Indiana. She leaves two sisters and five grandchildren. Mrs. Gambold had been in failing health for the past two years. She is known to all town folks as Grace, a well liked Christian lady. She will be missed in church and club affairs.

Services were held for her on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 and burial was in the local cemetery. Those conducting the funeral service were Rev. Walter Bartholomew and the Rev. Allan Harlan. Robert Heavin a senior this year at Cascade High School was one of 60 teenage science students to win a scholarship to Indiana University to follow some special science. He did eight week’s work and enjoyed it fully. The story got out that he was so interested a few times that he forgot the lunch hour. His work was directed by Dr. Heise and the subject studied was psychopharmacology A tall stack of science books

is a treat to Robert. The following callers were at the home of Mrs. Edna Smith this week: Mrs. Ethyl Barker Mr. Roy Shoemaker and Mr. Johnny Shoemaker of Fillmore; Mrs. Bonnie Campbell, and Mrs. Virginia Broadstreet of Cloverdale. The official board of the United Methodist Church, presided over by Mr. Harry Walton, met in the church basement assembly room Monday evening. Attending this meeting was the new minister, Rev. Walter Bartholomew, who comes from Lebanon. His first appearance in the pulpit will be on Sunday, September

1st. Some twenty or more members were present at Monday’s meeting. Folks atxmt Coatesville got a "kick” at seeing Professor James Elrod in the role of a waiter. Well, we have seen Jim in many roles, one as a lad going to grade school, then to the local high school and then away to Indiana University. We recall Jim as a soldier in Italy a few years ago. We were glad to see him as a “prof” at DePauw. His dad and mom live here at the south-east edge of town on their farm. Mr. Joe Elrod, son of Mr. and Continued on Page 5
