Heat is wasted in Wabash Valley yearly
Enough heat is wasted in the Wabash Valley to heat (and cool) every home in the Valley. Much of this waste heat could be used at a profit instead of using up the ‘‘cool” of our Wabash River and tributaries to get rid of it, said Howard Mendenhall, executive vice president of the Wabash Valley Association. Fortunately we have not yet reached a crisis of thermal pollution in our Basin, only a few localized fish kills during a hot
Obituary
There is no time that we could set For parting, We who must remain Are never ready for such pain. Even our prayer would be, “Not yet!” “Not yet, dear God-another day With us, let our beloved stay.” We must believe, when falls the blow That, wisely, God has willed it so. Wayne V. Pitts was born on Nov. 3, 1916 in Putnam County near Brick Chapel. He was the seventh of the nine children of William and lea D. Pitts. He departed this life on August 14, 1968. Wayne received his education in Putnam County Schools. He graduated from the Greencastle High School with the class of 1934. On October 8, 1938 Wayne was united in marriage to Retha L. Matkins at Limedale, Indiana. To this union was born two daughters, Luayne Pitts Friend and Tara Jean Pitts Finkbiner. Early in his life he did apprenticeship in carpentry and construction under the direction of his brother, Don. Wayne became a carpenter superintendent of construction work and was employed by the Simmons Construction Company for twenty, two years. Wayne walked worthily in his chosen profession. He was a worker with whom men were well-pleased, for he did labor tirelessly with his own hands and he saw that it was good. For him, a busy day was a happy day. It was as if he knew that the night cometh when no man can work. His day was characterized by his love for nature. He believed with Keats-that “a thing of beauty is a joy forever.” His vegetable garden was early, his trees groomed, and his lawn tended with loving care. Even his time spent along the stream banks and through the fields was a reflection of his love for the outdoors. His appreciation of nature was surpassed only by lus love for his family and home. During World War II Wayne served as a Chief Petty Officer with the United States Navy. He was stationed on New Caledonia in the South Pacific where he worked with the Seabees branch of the service. He was a member of the Greencastle First Baptist Church; Gen. Jesse M. Lee Post 1550 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Temple Lodge No. 47, F. and A.M. Wayne will long be remembered among his family and friends for his many kindly deeds, his willingness to lend a helping hand, his cheerfulness and loyalty to his fellowmen. His was a life filled with usefulness, and purpose. His life will continue upon this earth in the hearts of those who love and remember him best, his wife, Retha Matkins Pitts, two daughters Luayne and Tara Jean, two grandchildren Robin and Robert Wayne Friend. There are also two sisters who mourn his passing,Mrs.Raymond Skelton of Logansport and Mrs. Glenn Hodshire of Greencastle. There are four brothers Walter of New York, Carl of Seelyville, William of Lafayette and Donald of Greencastle. . Those in the family who preceeded him in death are, his parents, a sister, Mrs. Ross Bullerdick, and a brother Harold Pitts. They are not dead, Who live in hearts They leave behind. In those whom they have blessed They live again. Eternal life is theirs Throughout the years And time declares Their immortality. spell. But some hot summer day, when every new and old power plant in the Basin is Tuning full blast to satisfy the individual air-conditioners of the
Valley, the combined temperature loads added to the low flowing shallow stream will cause the river to heat up to the danger point for its remaining aquatic
life. Every new power plant that is built without a cooling tower is hastening the day when this will happen.
But why waste this valuable heat? Why can’t we heat and cool our homes with this waste heat? Why can’t factories be builtnearby to utilize it? Why can’t the waste steam be put to use by laundries, canneries, dairies and dozens of other common users
of low heat steam? Why could we not only heat and cool all of our homes from this central heat source but also our schools, hospitals and our places of business? Forty or fifty years ago our power plants used to heat our city homes with this thermal
waste. But the heat pump had not been invented and the} did not know what to do with it in the summer. Then we began to move our power plants out of town. Maybe we should reverse the trend ar.u build our new cities with homes,
factories and business places out in the country right next to the power plants that can warm us in winter and cool us in summer with heat which is now wasted and creates a serious nuisance. Everyone would 1 benefit. No one would be hurt.
