HHH pumping for first ballot victory votes

By RAYMOND LAHR CHICAGO (UPI>-Hubert H. Humphrey, running well ahead but running like he was scared anyway, told cheering Democratic delegates Tuesday that he offered the nation “the politics of hope." Humphrey plumped for votes ,to cinch the Democratic pres'idential nomination on the first ballot Wednesday in a raucous appearance before a joint caucus of delegates from Arizona, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana and Wyoming. The vice president chief rival, Eugene J. McCarthy, meanwhile received a setback from a Harris public opinion poll. The Louis Harris survey, taken after Richard M. Nixon won the GOP presidential nomination and after the Soviet bloc invasion of Czechoslovakia, showed Nixon beating either Humphrey, McCarthy or President Johnson by a six-point margin.

This took some steam out of the argument of McCarthy supporters that only he could defeat Nixon in November. It added an argument to some delegates who, fearing a defeat in November, still tried to push a draft of Sen. Edward M, Kennedy, Mass., as the standard bearer. Draft-Kennedy talk continued in cool convention city despite his reiteration of no interest in national office this year. Sen. George S. McGovern, backed for the presidential nomination by former supporters of the late Robert F. Kennedy, won an endorsement from Rep. Brock Adams, DWash., who said, however that should a Kennedy draft develop he would leave McGovern and vote for the Massachusetts senator. Close associates of President Johnson predicted he would be here tonight to celebrate his 60th birthday with his party. Secret Servicemen, taking no Continued on Page 15 Cape in 2 Lengths

DEAR HELOISE: I frequently give my children applesauce, gelatin, cottage cheese or canned fruit with their meals. As these foods nearly always "run”, I put it in individual paper cupcake liners and place one on each child's plate. Sure saves a messy plate as w’ell as extra dishes. Lillian D’angelo * * * A cute idea, Lillian. It also perks up the child's interest by adding eye appeal to the plate, which is so important when serving little folks. If you’ve a dishwasher and don't mind the extra dishes, those little pyrcx custard cups are equally good for this. Makes whatever’s inside sorta special, doesn’t it ? And no one is fussing about their food running together either! Hcloise * * * DEAR HELOISE: You are a friend indeed . . . When I was a working mother your hints saved my life many times. Now I save your hints to pass on to other working mothers. Mrs. Bearman * * * DEAR HELOISE: Make ice cream sandwiches wuth your favorite cake-type brownie recipe. Cut the brownie squares in half, place slices of ice cream in between and freeze. Absolutely mouth-watering! Laura Brand * * * DEAR HELOISE: Through the years I’ve helped many charities. As I support myself and two children w'ho are now in college, I have no money for these charities. Instead, I send them old nylons, used postage stamps, used Christmas cards, leftover new material and yarn from my sewing and knitting projects, and my miscellaneous trading stamps of small quantities where I d never collect enough for my own use. What I send may seem meaningless, but when it's

added to other donations, someone in need can make good use of it. My cash outlay on these things is the cost of postage, which is minor. Virginya Phillips * * * DEAR HELOISE: I’ve just now discovered something . . . Contesting is one of my hobbies. So many cold diink contests ask you to send the cork liners out of their bottle caps. I was trying to get the liners out and tearing them all up until I hit on the idea of putting my iron on top of the bottle lids and letting it sit awhile. That loosens the glue and makes them much easier to remove. Just hold the cap with a cloth so you won’t burn your hands. Mrs. H. H. Vinson * * * The hot iron will loosen the glue, but It does take awhile. If you grab the bottle eap with your kitehen tongs and hold a cigarette lighter under it for ten or fifteen seconds, the eork lining will come out all in one piece. Just don't burn your “pinkies” and I hope you win. Heloise * * * DEAR HELOISE: Through just plain carelessness. I sprayed my wig i on its foam head block) with wig cleaner, making a bad stain on the foam. I now' have slipped a plastic bag over the block and tied it tightly around the neck with a stout stiing. Now' I have something to grasp while I'm spraying it and I don’t worry about messing up the foam block. Two Heads * * * DEAR HELOISE: When washing dishes or working at the stove on food that requires constant stirring, I do these chores with my knees resting on a padded kitchen chair. Not only saves tired tootsies but I find this very relaxing and still get the job done! Mary Cohen
