By MURRAY J. BROWN UPI Travel Editor NEW YORK «UPIi—American humorist Robert Benchley once said “in America there are two classes of travel — first class and with children.” Then there was actor W. C. Fields’ classic cantankerous comment: “Any man who hates children and dogs can’t be all bad.” And. odds are. that Dad at times during the “fun-filled” family vacation will agree with Benchley and Fields. True, it generally is only a passing moment of irritation but traveling by car with the kids sometimes is like trying to sleep with cracker crumbs in the bed. The irritations might be small, but that doesn’t make them any less irritating. So. if you are planning to load the family in the car during the summer to see the U.S A., start smoothing the trail before school lets out. says Wallace W. Lee. jr. executive vice president of the Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge Division. "Old advice is still good advice.” said Lee. "Plan ahead.
Rule One is to try to be prepared for whatever may come up. If there are older children in the family they can help.” Lee suggested putting the kids to work making scrap books of the route with maps and information cut out of travel brochures. "Then when the family is on the road these junior planners can keep notes and add souvenirs such as postcards, matchbook covers, soap wrappers and admission tickets, saving space for snapshots.” he said. "Besides being a help on the road, the research will make children more aware of the enjoyment of traveling. It’s easier then for the scenic and historic attractions along the American countryside to compete with comic books and boredom.” Difficult Age Lee said the most difficult children to travel with are those in the two-to-five group. To keep them from getting too restless and harrassing Dad while he's trying to keep his attention on the road. Mom should stock a supply of simple riddles, stories and games.

By ROBERT MUSEL NEW YORK (UPI)—The daytime serials are beginning to turn their power of daily repetition on such national problems as race and the generation gap and while there are some who scoff at the influence of soap operas on the great issues of our time Mary Stuart is not among them. Miss Stuart, who has been Joanna Tate in CBS-TV’s "Search for Tomorrow” since the series made its debut 17 years ago, is convinced the daily shows are uniquely placed in the television firmament to shed the most light where it is most needed. Opening lead — queen of
spades.
The outcome of most hands depends largely on how the defenders’ cards are divided, and declarer's chief problem is to guess how the unseen cards are distributed and adjust his play accordingly. In doing so, he naturally chooses the course of play that offers him the best chance of success. Here is a typical case. South is in six notrump, having jumped to two notrump (showing 13 to 15 points l. which North, with 20 points, raises to six. West leads the queen of Spades. A count of winners reveals that South has eleven sure tricks. He has two practical ( ways of acquiring a twelfth trick. One is to find the diamonds divided 3-3. in which case his fourth diamond becomes a trick; the other is to
find the hearts divided 3-3. in which case he can establish a twelfth trick by giving up a
heart
The problem of which suit to plav first is highly important. For example, if South starts by cashing three diamonds to see whether the suit is favorably divided, he goes down. However, this isn't, the proper approach to the play. The correct suit to attack first is hearts. After winning the spade lead with the ace. the next play should he ^ low heart from both hands Assume East wins the trick and returns a spade South wins with the king and cashes the A-K of hearts to see how he stands When the suit proves to be divided 3-3. his worries are over and he makes the rest of the tricks. But if it develops that the hearts are not favorably distributed, South still has a 3-3 diamond break (and possibly a squeeze) in reserve.
in contrast to the single hour on a single night of a prime time special.” she said. And we can and do take up issues long before they become acceptable in prime time.” It is, of course, a noteworthy fact that such delicate subjects as abortion got their first airings in the daytime serials. Sharpwitted and Talented Miss Tate is a sharpwitted, talented lady with a slightly retrousse (tip-tilted) nose who sang and acted in Hollywood musicals. She thought up the original idea for the serial herself, still offers "valid and useful” advice to the scriptwriters, composes songs and has other irons in the fire. She finds all this activity a not unmixed blessing. "Competent women,” she said wryly, "turn some men off”. Her official biography hints that she was approaching stardom in films but she insists she was simply an actress who worked regularly. "Don’t believe that biography,” she warned. "It was written by my ex-husband.” Since she feels daytime serials should reflect what is really going on in the country Miss Stuart said that when "Search for Tomorrow” goes into its new half-hour format in Continued on Page 5 Turtle Tip FLAMINGO, Fla. A favorite pillow and a familiar old blanket are good to encourage afternoon naps. Most mothers already know that two things are essential for happy traveling with kids: snacks such as cookies and fruit and something to clear up the mess afterwards. A roll of paper towels and some waterless cleaner will take care of the inevitable spills and smears on the kids and the upholstery. And don’t forget the litter bag for the disposal of wrappers and other trash — never dump them out of the window. Lee said some families take along a “mystery bag” for every day on the road. This is just a peek-proof paper bag. In the afternoon when the backseat squabbles are increasing in intensity and even the best-behaved child is getting restless and feels like bopping the baby, open the bag. In it. Mom could have hidden a surprise for everyone — an inexpensive little game or book, or perhaps an I O.U. for an ice cream cone or soft drink at the next stop. No matter how much the children enjoy the journey. Lee said, chances are good that the high point of each day on the road will be the stop for the night. Then they can go for a splash in the pool, explore strange surroundings and run off some of the energy that has been canned in the car during the day. “There might be sadder pictures than that of a tired father stranded in a forest of ‘no vacancy’ signs with a carload of fretful children, but I doubt it.” Lee said. "To make sure this doesn't happen, make your reservations well in advance. A telephone call and you can be sure that the end of the day will be as pleasant as the beginning.” Howard Johnson’s and other major motel and hotel chains offer free reservation services. Decide on your next stop and telephone ahead.
