Century to kick off State Fair activities

Formal ceremonies marking the opening of the Indiana State Fair will precede the running of the State Fair Century 100mile new car auto race Friday night. Indiana Lt. Gov. Robert L. Tribe to meet San Diego tonight The fourth annual Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce Night at Bush Stadium will be tonight when the Indianapolis Indians meet San Diego in a single game starting at 7:45 p.m. Co-sponsoring the special night are 19 leading business firms which include Allison Divsion of General Motors; American United Life Insurance Company; L.S. Ayres & Company; Bryant Manufacturing Company; Chevrolet-Indianapolis, Division of General Motors Corp; Danner’s, Incorporated, Ford Motor Company; Hook Drugs, Incorporated; Indiana Bell Telephone Company; Indianapolis Newspapers, Inc.; Indianapolis Power & Light Company; Inland Container Corporation; P.R. Mallory & Company, Incorporated; Marsh Supermarkets; Merchants National Bank and Trust Company; Rock Island Refining Corporation; Sears, Roebuck & Company; Stewart-Warner Corporation, and The WFBM Stations.

Rock and Indianapolis Mayor Richard G. Lugar will join a host of other celebrities in ribbon cutting ceremonies on the track in front of the grandstand at 5:30 p.m. Practice for the stock car show—expected to attract a record crowd—will follow immediately with qualifying slated at 6 and the main event at 8 o’clock. The field zoomed to 38 today with the receipt of an entry from Andy Hampton of Louisville by Joseph L. Quinn Jr., the Fair’s director of auto racing. Little World Series WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (UPI) — The Terre Haute, Ind., team plays Richmond, Va., today in the 22nd Annual Little League World Series. The opening game will be between Latin American Champion Chinandega and Canadian champion Lenoxville of Quebec. Hal Schumacker, New York Giants pitcher during the 1930s, will throw out the first ball before the opening game. Teams from Japan, West Germany, Nicaragua, Canada and the United States climax a month - long tournament grind with four days of pressure baseball in the new $300,0004500seat Little League Stadium. On Wednesday, Hagerstown, Md., meets Santa Ana, Calif., and Wakayamo, Japan, opposes Weisbaden, West Germany.

Hampton will be at the wheel of the 1967 Dodge Charger which Don White drove to the USAC national stock car championship last year. (Spl)—Jerry Wallace, a 12 year old Banner-News carrier from Cloverdale, landed a 6 pound large mouth bass Saturday near his home. Jerry’s catch was well off the state record of 10 lbs. 6 oz. recorded in a Hendricks County pound, but it was a pretty good days work for the youth.

Drag field takes shape

INDIANAPOLIS, IND., Aug. ()- The largest fuel dragster field in the history of drag racing is rapidly taking shape as entries continue to pour in for the 14th annual National Championship Drag Races at Indianapolis Raceway Park August 29 through September 2. Officials for the National Hot Rod Association, which produces and sanctions the $150,000 event, have now accepted more than 80 entries from top ranking fuel dragster drivers, assuring fans of the biggest and speediest drag race ever. Two time Nationals winner Don Garlits was among the first to file for a shot at Top Fuel Eliminator honors which he won last year. He has been joined by a host of other prominent speed specialists including the popular Ramchargers team from Warren, Mich. The Ramchargers, with veteran George Kitchen and Detroit’s Butch Bryan. Maryland’s Bub Reese. Ohio’s driver Chuck Kurzawa at the helm, have dominated qualifying at both the NHRA Nationals and Spring.nationals but thus far have failed to make the winner’s circle despite blistering runs at better thn 230 mph in slightly more than 6 seconds. Kurzawa is expected to be among the low elapsed time qualifiers when time trials to determine the 32-car Top Fuel Elimi n a t o r runoff field get underway August 29. City hosts 9th Annual Autumn Coon Hunt

The 9th annual Autumn Oak Wild Coon Hunt will be held at the Putnam County Fairgrounds August 30 , 31 and September 1. The hunt, sponsored and licensed by the United Kennel Club of Kalamazoo, Michigan, will draw hunters from all over the United States and Canada and is the largest hunt in the U.S. Six breeds of U.K.C.- licensed dogs will be represented—Black & Tan, Blue Tick, English, Plott, Redbone, and Walker. The Night Hunt which had 452 entries in 1967 will be held on Friday and Saturday nights, August' 30 and 31. Ten trophies will be awarded to the highest point dogs as well as trophies to the highest scorer of the six breeds. Jim Mann, President of the local Deer Creek Coonhunter Club, will be the Master of Hounds for the hunt. Saturday afternoon the Deer Creek Coonhunters Club will have a treeing contest at the Fairgrounds. Sunday, September l,at 10a.m. the trophies will be awarded for the hunt. The Bench Show will start immediately after the presentation of awards. James Merchant, of Bellknap, Illinois; will be the Judge. The final event will be the Water Race at the Jaycee Park following the Bench Show. The trophies for the hunt are being displayed this week in the window of J.C. Penny and Company. Manford R. Craver, Greencastle, is the manager of the hunt and Dr. E.G. Fuhrmanisthe president of the United Kennel Club. The Deer Creek Coonhunters Club, the host club, will provide Judges and Guides for the hunt and serve meals at the fairgrounds. autumn oak catagories Night Hunt Trophies awarded to ten top scorers overall in the registered hunt. Night Champion Hunt for dogs with 100 points from prior night hunts and at least one 1st place in a night hunt. Grand Night Champion Hunt for dogs with 5 wins in Night Champion Hunts. Place for trophies based on plus and minus points received in each cast. Each cast has 4 dogs and handlers plus a judge and a guide. The casts are in the woods for three hours and no game is killed. Bench Show By Breeds Pups—male class, female class--up to 1 year. Juniors—male class, female class—1 to 2 years. Seniors—male class, female class—2 years and up. Pairs—two dogs of the same breed which are matched. Champions—100 UKC Bench Show points and 1st place at least once. Grand Champions—Champion of Champions three times. Treeing Contest The number of barks at a tree containing a coon are counted for a given period of time. Water Race A coon in a basket is pulled across the water. The dogs are let loose to chase it across the water to the tree containing the coon where they must bark treed first.
